HIALEAH, FL—MARCH 1, 2015—Hialeah Park's closing weekend featured a heavily weighted stakes card on Sunday. Three of the feature black-type events were the final legs of the Hialeah Park Sprint and Distance Series and the Lucky Loser Stakes.
The Star Alert Returns in Final Distance Stakes
It was a repeat performance when 1-2-3 finishers in the Keys West Stakes on February 8, returned to take the same order of finish in the $42,000 Sailfish Stakes, the final leg of the Hialeah Park Distance Series, Sunday afternoon.
The Star Alert was much the best under jockey Yodanis Amaro as the 9-year-old galloped to an impressive 6¼ length win over I Beat The Feet. Steel Together finished 3 ½ lengths in front of Steel Together for second place. The Beat The Feet (TB) gelding completed the 1,000 yards in :52.494 seconds, a 98 speed index, with a 12 mph crosswind.
Ricardo Martinez saddled the The Star Alert for owner Roman Correa. Three races back he was second for a $10,000 tag at Prairie Meadows last October. Bred in Oklahoma by Hershel Cole, from the Raise The Gamble mare Lil Gamble Star, The Star Alert has compiled a (49) 9-6-4 record. The $25,200 Key West winner's purse boosted his career total to past $126,120.
Steel Together, who pressed the pace under jockey Donell Blake settled for third place. Michel Arrieta trains the 7-year-old Call Me Together gelding for Enrique Arrieta. Shane Gould bred the bay in Louisiana from the Osceola Warrior mare Lafastchick. The $4,620 show earnings pushed his career total over the one-hundred grand mark to $113,292.
Slinky Red, Reds Casino, Lia Me Blue, Eyeontheline and Texas Vision completed the field.
Spit Curl Daisy Easy Winner in Lucky Loser Stakes
Spit Curl Daisy, owned-and-trained by Jesus Gonzalez, Jr., broke sharp and cleared the field early under jockey Raul Gutierrez to win the $23,000 Lucky Loser Stakes by one-length over Hes Too Icy For Me. Victorious Shake Em finished three-quarters back in third.
Hes Too Icy For Me, winner of the 2010 Rainbow Futurity(G1), earned $13,500 for owner/trainer Ricardo Martinez. The son of all-time leading sire First Down Dash earned $4,600 to boost his career total to $388,652. Vessels Stallion Farm, LLC and D M Cattle Co bred the 7-year-old in California. The photo-finish camera could not separate Scream N Eagle and Sting Like A Viper who tied for second and earned $3,487 each for their efforts.
