Twenty-Nine Sophomores Entered in Sunday's Gillespie County Fair Derby Trials
Firecracker Derby (G3) runner-up Swags is among 29 three-year-olds entered in Sunday's 350-yard Gillespie County Fair Derby trials.

FREDERICKSBURG, TX–AUGUST12, 2022–
Twenty-nine 3-year-olds, headed by Luciano Gutierrez IV's Swags, are entered in Sunday's 350-yard Gillespie County Fair Derby trials.

A sorrel son of Kiss My Hocks, Swags will be shortening in distance off of his second-place finish, 1-1/2 lengths behind winner Lil Longmire, in the 400-yard, $177,000 Firecracker Derby (G3) at Delta Downs on July 8. The colt drew post 4 and will be ridden by Jorge J. Garcia for trainer Adrian Huitron in the second of three trials.

Swags' nine opponents in the second heat include Mr de Capi, a gelded son of Capo de Capi trained by Angel Sanchez for owner Jesus Olvera. Mr de Capi is coming off of a second-place run, one length behind winner Gulf Coast Flyer, in the 400-yard, $161,000 Retama Park Derby on July 30.

Mr de Capi drew the rail post and will be ridden by Jose I. Martinez.

Other prominent sophomores entered in Sunday's trials include Onthewingsofaneagle, a stakes-winning daughter of One Famous Eagle owned by War Eagle Racing and Sandy Coleman. Onthewingsofaneagle has earned $46,522 from four races this season, and she scored a 1 3/4-length victory in the June 4, $54,000 John Buchanan Memorial Stakes (R) for Texas-bred 3-year-old fillies at Sam Houston Race Park.

Onthewingsofaneagle drew post 3 and will be ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr. for trainer Paul Leal in the first trial.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the August 28, $25,000-added Gillespie County Fair Derby.
