Flying Cowboy 123, Five Bar Stoli Headline Texas Classic Derby Trials

Flying Cowboy 123, Five Bar Stoli Headline Texas Classic Derby Trials

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—OCTOBER 15, 2019—Flying Cowboy 123 and Five Bar Stoli, a pair of Grade 1-placed runners during the Ruidoso Downs summer meet, are among the 47 3-year-olds entered in Friday’s 440-yard Texas Classic Derby (G1) trials at Lone Star Park.

A sorrel son of world champion Apollitical Jess trained by James J. Gonzales II for owner Paragon Farms LLC, Flying Cowboy 123 is coming off of a third-place finish in the 440-yard, $1,550,855 All American Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs in September 1. The colt has earned $889,176 from 11 starts, and he ended his 2-year-old campaign with a head victory in the 400-yard, $1.015-million Texas Classic Futurity (G1).

Flying Cowboy 123 drew the rail post and will be ridden by Ricky Ramirez in the first of five trials.

Five Bar Stoli is coming off of a Ruidoso summer meet during which he ran second, a neck behind winner Eagle Coast, in the July 20, $1.088-million Rainbow Derby (G1). John Stinebaugh trains the homebred Five Bar Cartel gelding for owner Garlyn O. Shelton.

Five Bar Stoli drew post 2 and will be ridden by James Flores in the fifth heat.

Jordan Eagle drew post 7 and will be ridden by Jesse Levario in the fifth trial. Trained by Josue Ponce for owner Javier Rosique, the One Famous Eagle will be making his first official start since December 15, when he scored a head victory as the odds-on favorite in the 400-yard, $311,000 Evangeline Downs Futurity.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the November 9, $400,000-est. Texas Classic Derby final.
