Uncle D Heads Two Days Of Trials To $3-Million All American Futurity At Ruidoso Downs - Updated

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—AUGUST 12, 2019—Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC’s Rainbow Futurity winner Uncle D comes off his most important win to head the two days of 440-yard trials to the iconic Grade 1, $3-million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs.

The trials will be held on Friday and Saturday with 13 trials each day.

There is a special noon first post time for each trial program.

The horses with the five-fastest times on each day advance to the All American Futurity on Labor Day. The horses with the next five-fastest times on each day gain preference to race in the $200,000 All American Juvenile, also on Labor Day.

Labor Day is closing day of the Ruidoso Downs’ summer season.

Uncle D races on Friday afternoon in the seventh trial.

The Clint Crawford-trained Uncle D easily won the Grade 1, $1-million Rainbow Futurity at Ruidoso Downs in his most recent start. He burst to the lead from the inside post position and then drew out to a one-and-one-quarter-length win.

That decisive Rainbow Futurity win on July 21 made Uncle D a hot favorite for the All American Futurity.

"He came back (from the Rainbow Futurity) as good as you could ask for," Crawford said. "He’s eating well and has no issues."

An elegantly bred son of Corona Cartel and Little Surfer, Uncle D made his fourth career start in the Rainbow Futurity. Little Surfer is a sister to champions and Champion of Champions winners Ocean Runaway and Runaway Wave.

"I don’t want to overrun them," Crawford said. "It’s too hard for most horses to come into these trials with six or more starts, but it can happen."

Uncle D showed he was one of the premier two-year-olds in the nation back on June 1 when he was second in the Grade 1, $1,073,100 Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park.

Cody Rodger Smith rides Uncle D from the seventh post position.

Miguel Y. Gallegos and Mauricio Gallegos’ Hotsempting was second to Uncle D in the Rainbow Futurity as the 8-5 favorite. The Tempting Dash-sired filly earned that favoritism after she raced to the fastest-qualifying time during the first of two days of trials to the Rainbow Futurity. She covered the 400 yards in :19.512 while winning by an impressive three-and-three-quarter lengths.

Trained by Jose Muela, Hotsempting won her Ruidoso Futurity trial while making her career debut and qualified for the Grade 1, $1-million Ruidoso Futurity.

Esgar Ramirez rides Hotsempting in the second trial on Friday. The filly starts from the third post position.

DF Mischievous Jess Partners’ Df Mischievious Jess is the sole supplemental nominee to enter the trials at a cost of $50,000.

Trained by Jimmy Padgett, Df Mischievious Jess brings a solid stakes record into the trials with third-place finishes in the Rainbow Futurity behind Uncle D and Hotsempting, and the $100,000 Heritage Place Juvenile on June 1.

Df Mischievious Jess starts in the final (13th) trial on Saturday. Rodrigo Sigala Vallejo is up with the sixth post position.

Joining Df Mischievious Jess on Saturday’s program is Sam Green’s homebred Uptowne Babe in the seventh trial and Wootan Racing’s homebred Oatman Creek Senator in the 10th trial.

Uptowne Babe, a $40,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, makes her first appearance since winning the Heritage Place Futurity by three quarters of a length over Uncle D on June 1. The Mr Jess Perry daughter got an excellent start from the outside post position and went on to win the Heritage Place Futurity in 17.632 for the 350 yards.

The Guillermo Reed-trained Uptowne Babe showed her potential when she finished a close third in the Restricted Grade 1, $895,210 Remington Park Oklahoma-bred Futurity. She was the 5-2 favorite for the futurity after racing to the fastest-qualifying mark from the second of two days of trials.

Rolando Raudales rides Uptowne Babe from the seventh post position.

Oatman Creek Senator makes his first appearance since a competitive third-place finish in the Ruidoso Futurity back in June. The gelding by Louisiana Senator was a close second in his Ruidoso Futurity trial, his first start.

Trainer Mike Joiner will have J.R. Ramirez ride Oatman Creek Senator from the eighth post position.
