SELMA, TX—JULY 29, 2016—Three trials were run on the Friday evening card for the $43,200 Adequan Texas Derby Challenge.
Tellereyematthebar (5.80) posted the fastest qualifying time, covering 400 yards in :20.11 in the final trial. A homebred owned by James Hrabovsky and Leann Nalls, the son of Teller Cartel out of the First to Shine mare Eye Shine Special was ridden by Juan Garcia, Jr.
Trained by Brian Stroud, the brown gelding broke his maiden last April at Sam Houston Race Park and followed that with a win in an allowance at Lone Star Park.
Sure Fire Flyer, a daughter of All American Futurity(G1) winner Mr Piloto earned the second fastest clocking of :20.267 after finishing second to Tellereyematthebar. Santiago Rojoas, Jr. trains the filly for owner Israel Soliz, Jr.
Trainer Rolando Almanza saddled Go Binskey Bear Go to a three-quarter length win in the first trial to post the third fastest time of :20.333 seconds. Julian Gamez owns the California-bred son of leading sire FDD Dynasty from the Tres Seis mare Love That Six.
The ten finalists will return on closing night of the Retama Park Quarter Horse meet, Saturday, August 13. The winner will represent Texas in the $200,000 Adequan Challenge Championship at Los Alamitos on October 29.
