RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JUNE 17, 2016—Thomas Lepic’s homebred The Fiscal Cliff cruised to a one-half length win with the fastest-qualifying time of :19.960 for 400 yards in the first of two trials to the $40,000 Adequan Ruidoso Downs Derby Challenge on Friday afternoon.
The 400-yard finals with the horses posting the 10-fastest times will be contested July 2 at Ruidoso Downs.
The Fiscal Cliff was making his Ruidoso Downs’ debut after racing at Remington Park and Prairie Meadows.
A son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon, The Fiscal Cliff came into the trials off a second from two starts this year at Remington Park.
Last year, after winning the $100,000 Heritage Place Juvenile at Remington Park for trainer Kasey Willis, he went to Prairie Meadows to take the $181,321 Iowa Double Gold Futurity and then rolled to a two-and-one-half-length win in the $201,000 Jim Bader Futurity.
A homebred for Lepic, The Fiscal Cliff is out of the Shazoom mare Signs Zoomer. He has compiled a (10) 7-2-0 record and earned $222,433.
Owned by Robert Odom III, Randall Dees and Scott Bryant, They Seis Im Quick won the other trial with the second-fastest time of :19.979.
The Mike Joiner-trained They Seis Im Quick, a $50,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, scored his second career win with the one-half length trial score. He has been on the board in each of his latest five starts.
Melissa Ann Miller bred the Tres Seis gelding in Texas from the Royal Quick Dash mare One Quick Cookie. He is a half-brother to multiple graded stakes winner Jess Fatureme Quick ($687,155).
Omar Reyes had the riding call.
