RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JUNE 21, 2015—Johnny Trotter and Burnett Ranches LLC’s fastest-qualifier Jess Swanky heads the Ruidoso Downs undercard stakes, the $52,650 Adequan New Mexico Derby Challenge, on Saturday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

In the 400-yard Adequan New Mexico Derby Challenge trials, Jess Swanky picked an opportune time to break his maiden when he won the second of three trials. The gelded son of Mr Jess Perry was timed in :19.755 while making his fourth start.

Last summer at Ruidoso Downs, Jess Swanky was second in a 350-yard maiden race and then his All American Futurity trial for trainer Blane Wood.

Jess Swanky has the sixth post position and Ricky Ramirez will ride.

Trainer Mike Robbins sent out the second- and third-fastest qualifiers Tempting Valor and He Is The Risingstar.

Matt Ratliff and Vicki Tebow’s Tempting Valor could be ready to step forward after finishing second behind Jess Swanky in their trial with the second-fastest time of :19.831. The Tempting Dash gelding won his maiden at first asking and then qualified for the Grade 1, $900,000 Rainbow Futurity last year. This spring at Remington Park, the gelding qualified for the $306,000 Oklahoma-bred Derby.

Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches’ He Is The Risingstar pulled off an 18-1 upset in his trial when he won by three quarters of a length with a :19.868 mark. The Mr Jess Perry gelding was winless from three 2014 starts, however he has matured this year to win two of his three efforts.

Jose Amador Alvarez rode both horses in their trials and chose He Is The Risingstar in the Adequan Derby. G.R. Carter Jr. picked up the mount on Tempting Valor.
