HOUSTON, TX—May 16 2015—Terrazas Family homebred Jumpn Streak was a convincing winner in the $55,170 Adequan Texas Derby Challenge, the first of two Bank of America Challenge stakes races run at Sam Houston Race Park Saturday afternoon.

He was the third-fastest 3-year-old from trials on April 24, but was much the best in the final, drawing off by a two-length margin under the capable veteran, Santos Carrizales.

“I've ridden this horse before and knew that 400 yards is a little long for him,” said Carrizales. “In the trials, I let him relax and tried to save him for the final. Today, I didn’t save anything; I just let him go and they had to catch me.”

Josue Ponce is a young trainer with good results this meet at Sam Houston Race Park. He is pleased to have the son of Jumpn Chic in his barn.

“I didn’t get to know him until after the trials at Hialeah,” said the 21-year-old Ponce. “We knew he was a really good horse. Santos rode him well in the trials and had confidence. I just hoped for a good break and he came running.”

The homebred is out of Juanas Streak, a daughter of Hall-of-Fame stallion Streakin La Jolla.

Michael Amburn's Freakin Runaway ran a big race in trials under rider Luis Ramirez, recording the fastest qualifying time. The son of Ocean Runaway has never missed a check in his seven career starts, completing his 2-year-old campaign with a third place finish in the $151,500 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) at Prairie Meadows last October.

Freakin Runaway ran a game second today for trainer Mike Robbins. Todd Fincher and Fred Alexander bred the gray gelding in New Mexico from the Streakin La Jolla mare Streakin Freakin.

Longshot My Favorite High ran third with Adrian Ramos in the irons. The Bigtime Favorite gelding owned by Jaime Aguirre, Jr. and trained by Jose Cruz earned $5,517 for his effort. Still winless in five starts, My Favorite High was bred in Louisiana from the On A High mare High On Cider. Dan-Nan, Inc. is the breeder.

Sent off as the second betting favorite, Jumpn Streak paid $9.20 for the win, adding his second career win from 14 starts. With today’s check of $25,378, the Texas-bred has now earned $51,368.

Jumpn Streak earned a berth into the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G1) at Lone Star Park on November 7.

Whosa Kat finished fourth, followed by a dead-heat for fifth between Mighty Corona Jr and Ipolito. Go On Dy Nasty, No Real Choice and What A Smooth Deal completed the field. Essencia was scratched.
