SUNLAND PARK, NM—APRIL 6, 2015—A large field of 12 aged sprinters, headed by recent graded stakes winner Jesscuzican, has been entered in Saturday’s 440-yard, $100,000-added Bank of America New Mexico Championship Challenge Stakes (G2) at Sunland Park.
Jesscuzican is a homebred 6-year-old Feature Mr Jess stallion racing for Darian Burt from the barn of trainer Wes Giles. He will be making his first start since March 1, when he scored a nose victory in the 400-yard West Texas Maturity (G3) at Sunland.
Jesscuzican drew post 2 and will be ridden by J. Martin Bourdieu.
Other contenders in the quarter-mile stakes include Melissa Ann Miller’s Jess Featureme Quick, a 6-year-old son of Feature Mr Jess trained by Paul Jones. A finalist in last year’s $163,000 Vessels Maturity (G1) at Los Alamitos, the gelding is coming off of a second-place finish to Jesscuzican in the West Texas Maturity.
L. Salvador Martinez has been named to ride Jess Featureme Quick from the rail post.
Rocketair, a 4-year-old Jumpn gelding campaigned by Preston and Karen Cloud, ships in from Oklahoma, where he ran fourth, 1 1/2 lengths behind winner Pure D Spit, in the 350-yard, $50,000 Eastex Stakes (G2) at Remington Park. Trained by Clinton Crawford, Rocketair is coming off of a sophomore campaign in which he ran third in the $292,000 Texas Classic Derby (G1) at Lone Star Park.
Rocketair drew post 11 and will be ridden by Ivan Carnero.
The winner of this race will earn a berth in the Grade 1, $350,000 Bank of America Challenge Championship in October. The complete lineup, in post position order including jockey assignments and morning-line odds--
