Racehorse Hall of Fame Inductions Held Friday Night at Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JULY 12, 2019—The induction of Mine That Bird, Harriett Peckham, Leo Wood and Johnny Cox into the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame was conducted before an enthusiastic crowd on Friday night at Ruidoso Downs.

Every year, one horse, one owner/breeder, one trainer and one jockey are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Mine That Bird won the 2009 Kentucky Derby for owners Dr. Leonard Blach and Mark Allen of Roswell, New Mexico. The gelding raced in New Mexico before winning the Kentucky Derby, finishing second in the Preakness Stakes and third in the Belmont Stakes.

The earner of $2.2-million is retired in Roswell.

Owner/breeder Harriett Peckham was a force in quarter horse racing. She built Buena Suerte Ranch in Roswell and it became an iconic operation that stood leading sires Go Man Go and Easy Jet.

Peckham was known for her broodmare band and her commitment to mare care. Her numerous important mares included champion Go Together, world champion Goetta and All American Futurity winner Decketta.

Trainer Leo Wood conditioned All American Futurity winner Pie In The Sky, Rainbow Futurity winner Mighty Deck Three and Rainbow Futurity winner Flying Rockette at Ruidoso Downs.

Wood is the father of 2018 champion trainer Blane Wood and grandfather of leading trainer Trey Wood, who conditions the current number-one ranked older quarter horse Apocalyptical Jess.

Jockey Cox won the Rainbow Futurity and the All American Futurity aboard Mr Kid Charge and rode Rainbow Futurity winner Talent Bar. He won 27 futurities and 34 derbies during his 23 years of race riding.

The 2020 class to be inducted into the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame will be announced later this year.

The Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame is located on the second floor at Ruidoso Downs and admission is free.
