American Quarter Horse Foundation Receives Equine Research Donation

AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION—NOVEMBER 17, 2017—In November the four new owners of Ruidoso Downs pledged $10,000 to the American Quarter Horse Foundation’s equine research fund in honor of AQHA Past President

Dr. Glenn Blodgett. Dr. Blodgett worked on developing a new set of drug protocols that will be implemented by Ruidoso Downs to better protect the American Quarter Horse.

Ruidoso Downs Racetrack was acquired in October by Stan Sigman, Johnny Trotter, John Andreini and Narciso “Chicho” Flores. Along with the new manager, Jeff True, the new ownership group is actively pursuing new ways to safeguard the American Quarter Horse.

“The new ownership is dedicated to the welfare of our equine athletes. We felt it was important to back our new policy with a donation to the equine research fund, since welfare is a focus area for the fund. We think it is important to be at the forefront of welfare practices to better care for our extraordinary equine athletes,” said Stan Sigman, one of the four principals of All American Ruidoso Downs LLC.

The American Quarter Horse Foundation is dedicated to giving back to the American Quarter Horse by funding breakthroughs in equine medicine and welfare practices.

AQHA and the Foundation have awarded more than $11.2 million in research grants to various colleges and universities since 1960.

The purpose of the American Quarter Horse Foundation is to connect people and horses through charitable giving in order to support programs and initiatives that preserve our horse’s legacy and further the well-being of the American Quarter Horse and the people who comprise the Quarter Horse family.

The statement encompasses the Foundation’s purposes:

  1. To honor those who have transformed our industry through the Hall of Fame
  2. To inspire people through the Museum
  3. To support future leaders in accomplishing their dreams through scholarships
  4. To challenge the frontiers of knowledge through research
  5. To share empowerment through equine-assisted therapies
  6. To proactively address the needs of the industry.
