Portland Meadows Poised to Begin Racing into the Track’s 71 Year History

PORTLAND, OR—SEPTEMBER 12, 2017—Horse Racing gets underway at twelve noon on Monday, October 2nd at Portland Meadows as the historic oval will host racing on Monday and Tuesday throughout the season with select Sundays also blended into the calendar.

Post times for all days will be twelve noon Pacific time with racing to extend to Tuesday, January 30th , 2018 which is closing day.

Opening day will put the spotlight on the traditional running of The Inaugural Stakes worth $10,000 added at five and one half furlongs for three year olds and upward. For the Quarter Horses the $10,000 added Director's Handicap at 3350 yards for three year olds and upward will be contested the following Monday (Oct. 9).

The Inaugural will be the first of thirty seven stakes races offered for the season with The 50th Running of the Portland Mile worth $25,000 added, $15,000-added Far West and $15,000 Baxter Andruss Futurities highlighting the stakes schedule and will be run on Sunday, January 28th, 2018 (for a full list of the stakes schedule visit portlandmeadows.com).

Many of the familiar faces that are expected to return to Portland Meadows this season are the now husband and wife duo of Jockeys Jake Samuels and last year’s leading Thoroughbred Jockey Kassie Guglielmino, who were both prominent riders in the colony last year.

Eliska Kubinova is expected to return as well after the conclusion of the Emerald Downs season.

Other familiar names expected are Javier Matias, Jennifer Whitaker, Nathan Haar, Leonel Camacho Flores, Osvaldo Gonzalez, Jose Zunino, Luis Gonzalez, Eduardo Sosa and several more. Jockeys Luis Gonzalez and Jake Samuels were among the leading Quarter Horse riders at the meet last year.

Expected among the returning Trainers are Howard Belvoir, Roddina Barrett, Jonathan Nance, Robert Baze, Rigoberto Velasquez, Nick Lowe, John Harris, Charles Essex, Vince Gibson, Neil Knapp and many more.
