Eagle Jazz Grabs Top Spot, Kvn Corona Debuts in AQHA Racing National 2-Year-Old Poll

AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION—JUNE 21, 2017—The $960,000 Ed Burke Memorial Futurity (G1) at Los Alamitos on Sunday, easily the biggest race of the past weekend, had an impact on the AQHA Racing National Poll for 2-year-olds, as winner KVN Corona debuted in the fourth spot to complete a quintet of Grade 1 winners at the top. The son of Corona Cartel, owned by Keith Nellesen and trained by Paul Jones, won for the third time in as many starts.

Last week’s poll had a tie at the top between Heritage Place Futurity (G1) winner Nymeria and Eagle Jazz, winner of the Ruidoso Futurity (G1) in a dead heat. This week, Eagle Jazz emerged with a slight advantage over Nymeria, and Uptown Fantasy, the other winner of the Ruidoso Futurity, held third. 

The older-horse poll was essentially unchanged, with Zoomin Effortlessly maintaining his position at the top over Jessies First Down, mirroring the finish of those two horses in the Remington Park Invitational Championship (G1) in Oklahoma City.

The polls figure to remain mostly static until the calendar turns to July, with graded stakes set for Delta Downs, Retama Park and Los Alamitos on that month’s first weekend.
