Quarter Horses Wear Pink During October, Will Rogers Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month

CLAREMORE, OK—OCTOBER 24, 2016—Sundays at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs, racehorses parade past the stands in unconventional pink saddle towels and silks. The event is an effort by the racing facility to bring awareness to the breast cancer disease.

“Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs has always been a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said John Lies, racing secretary and track announcer for Will Rogers Downs. “We are honored to continue that tradition and continue promoting awareness for this important cause.”

One race each Sunday in the month of October is selected and named in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Quarter Horses in that race are dressed with pink saddle towels, and the house silks are emblazed with the special breast cancer insignia.

As the winner of the race enters the Winners Circle, Lies invites any attending breast cancer fighters and survivors to join in a special photo. A copy of the photo is offered to the guests, and the moment is shown across the world on the race track’s simulcast feed.

The campaign is a personal one for Lies.

“My mother is a 12-year breast cancer survivor,” Lies said. “One of our own outriders is, as well. She provided an example of how fighters and survivors exist right here in the midst of our own racing family. We are pleased to do whatever we can to help Race for a Cure.”

Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs opened December 2005 and is currently undergoing a $3.5 million renovation to update the casino and horse racing track. It features six months of live horse racing, comprised of a spring Thoroughbred meet and fall Quarter Horse meet. Simulcast racing from around the world is broadcast year round inside the casino.

Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs is located 3 miles east of Claremore on Highway 20. For more information, visit www.cherokeecasino.com or call 918-283-8800.
