42 Three-Year-Olds Split Into Five Heats Compete Friday To Decide Field For Texas Classic Derby

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—OCTOBER 20, 2016—Five trial races combined has drawn 42 three-year-olds all scheduled to run Friday to decide the field for the 24th running of the Grade 1, $400,000 est. Texas Classic Derby to be held Saturday, November 12. The 10 that finish with the fastest times will advance. Gates open Friday at 5:30 p.m. First race post time is 6:35 p.m. The Texas Classic Derby Trials have been assigned as races four through eight on the nine race card.

Race 4, the first of the trials has drawn Dwayne Saucier & Michael Taylor's Brave Heart Won. Assigned morning line odds of 7-5, the gelded son of Apollitical Jess will make his first start since finishing third in the Grade 1, $2.4 Million All American Derby last month at Ruidoso. Trained by Judd Kearl, Brave Heart Won has career earnings of $330,455 from a record of 9-4-1-2. Jose Amador Alvarez has the riding assignment. This will be his first start at Lone Star Park.

Another Judd Kearl trainee has been made the 4-5 favorite in race 5. Bennie & E. Terri Jeter's Volcom Bay returns to action from a fourth place finish in the All American Derby. She was the fastest qualifier for the All American. The daughter of Volcom placed in the Ruidoso Derby last June. She also placed in last year's Texas Classic Juvenile Stakes here at the Grand Prairie track. She has bankrolled $420,434 from her record of 13-4-2-2. And her record at Lone Star Park is 2-1-1. Jockey Jose Amador Alvarez will have the mount.

The 9-5 morning line favorite in race 6 is Darling Farms' One Fabulous Eagle. A colt by One Famous Eagle has won 3 of 5 starts this year including the Corona Cartel Invitational Derby at Ruidoso in July. He placed in last year's All American Futurity behind Jess Good Candy. His most recent was an eighth place finish in last month's All American Derby. One Fabulous Eagle is trained by Kasey Willis, and will be ridden by Cesar Gomez.
