AQHA Breeders, Trainers Reach Career Milestones

Q-RACING JOURNAL—MAY 4, 2016—A handful of horsemen from around the racing industry have reached career AAQHA milestones in recent months.

Breeders

Breeder Bobby Cox surpassed the $20 million milestone as a breeder earlier this year. Cox, who will join theAmerican Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2017, is only the third breeder to ever reach the mark. The other two breeders are Dr. Ed Allred, who leads the all-time leading breeder category with more than $52 million, and Vessels Stallion Farm LLC, which has bred the earners of more than $30 million.

Vessels Stallion Farm LLC reached that $30 million in breeder earnings in January, pushed over the mark by Javier Alvarez Rodriguez’s Colt As Ice (Tres Seis-Icy In The Morn by First Down Dash). The famous ranch has a long and storied history; it is the breeder of the current AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow.com National Poll leader and champion Moonist ($864,168) and No. 3 pollster Moonin The Eagle ($406,478).

Janis and Mac Murray’s MJ Farms eclipsed $10 million in breeder earnings on March 4, pushed over the mark by Marc and Cole Jungers’ Essencia in a Sunland race. The Veguita, New Mexico, farm last year raced homebred Astica to win the champion 3-year-old filly honor. They are the No. 11 all-time leading breeders in the sport’s history.

Trainers

Champion trainer Paul Jones has overtaken the $80 million mark in trainer earnings as well as his 4,000th win (see related story), both on April 16, courtesy of trainees Tell Jess, owned by Martha Wells, and his own Fooseability. He is by far the sport’s all-time leading trainer by money earned, long having eclipsed Blane Schvaneveldt’s $55 million, but he still lags behind Schvaneveldt’s 5,186 career wins. Jones has been the Blane Schvaneveldt Champion Trainer every year since 2002.

Trainer Judd Kearl also reached $10 million in earnings in February, when stablemates EC Jet One and Carters Sixty Six teamed to win the $204,265 South Florida Derby. He is No. 38 on the list of all-time trainers by money earned.
