SHELBYVILLE, IN—NOVEMBER 09, 2020—Dropping back to a distance of 350 yards has given last year’s Two-Year-Old Quarter Horse of the Year HH CJ Shake the nod as the early morning line favorite in the sixth running of the $90,100 Harley Greene Derby Thursday, Nov. 9 at Indiana Grand.
Earning five wins in seven starts last year at two, HH CJ Shake has been second in four of his six starts this season, most of which have been at 400 yards. The Escondido Beach sophomore is four for five at 350-yards at Indiana Grand and will seek to add another stakes title to his credentials for Trainer Paul Martin.
Owned by Larry Carter, John Myers, Gary Brandon Bell and Rusty Hawkins, HH CJ Shake starts from post two at odds of 7-5 with Juan Marquez aboard. A win in the Greene Derby will put him over the $300,000 mark in career earnings.
Joining HH CJ Shake as a big favorite in the Greene Derby is Beach Benny, starting from post three with L.D. Martinez aboard. Also by Escondido Beach, the sophomore gelding, owned by breeder Pamela Hann, comes into the race with two wins and three seconds in five starts at the 350-yard distance.
The Tony Cunningham-trained stakes winner has only missed the top two once all season and is the second choice on the morning line at odds of 8-5.
The entire field, in post position order with jockey and odds, includes:
- Catchey Rhythm (Oscar Macias, 20-1)
- HH CJ Shake (Juan Marquez, 7-5)
- Beach Benny (L.D. Martinez, 8-5)
- HF Omaha Omaha (Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, 30-1)
- Jess Z Bob (Cesar Esqueda, 5-1)
- Thunder Beach (Rodney Prescott, 20-1)
- Jess A Flyin Beach (German Rodriguez, 20-1);
- Shakeitonthebeach (Sergio Ramirez, 30-1)
- PYC Fast Girls Rock (Natasha Fritz, 30-1)
- Blue Eyed Newman (Sammy Mendez, 15-1)
Trainers Tony Cunningham (Catchey Rhythm, Beach Benny, Jess A Flyin Beach) and Randy Smith (Thunder Beach, Shakeitonthebeach, Blue Eyed Newman) will each saddle three in the Greene Derby.
Trainer Paul Martin will saddle two (HH CJ Shake, Jess Z Bob). Of the 10 entered in the Greene Derby, six are by Indiana’s top stallion Escondido Beach.
