CYPRESS, CA—OCTOBER 5, 2018—Zoomin For Spuds won the running of the Wild West Futurity in 2015. He went to win six stakes races in 2016, including the Grade 1 Champion of Champions. Moonie Blues won the Wild West last year, then finished second to J Fire Up in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, and this year she has qualified to four graded derbies at the Orange County track.

New superstars figure to emerge from this year’s Wild West Futurity, as 42 juveniles will take part in a total of five trials at 350 yards on Sunday at Los Alamitos. The horses with the 10 fastest clockings will advance to the $136,850 final to be held on Sunday, October 28.

The trials will be headed by Firecracker Futurity winner Harem Bar Cartel, stablemate and Pot O’ Gold Futurity winner Ladys A Cartel, Hadley/Giles Futurity winner Jess Send It, Pot O’Gold runner-up Arizona Favorite, and Tolltac Handicap winner Mommas Dynasty.

Racing for Edward and Von Zae McNelis, Mommas Dynasty will take part in a strong opening trial on Sunday. The filly by FDD Dynasty will have a rematch with Tolltac runner-up Allyson Wonderland and they were only separated by a nose in their last meeting.

Owned and bred by Blaine Bateman, Allyson Wonderland had previously run second in the Cowboys Futurity at Emerald Downs. She’s also made the John Deere California Juvenile Challenge and Hadley/Giles finals. K & R Allred Ranch’s Arizona Favorite will compete in this trial. The gelding by Favorite Cartel is still a maiden, but in addition to his second-place finish in the Pot O’ Gold, he also finished fourth in the Firecracker final. Hector Magallanes, one of the premier Quarter Horse trainers in the Northwest, will saddle Arizona Cartel.

The owner/trainer team of Jose Carmona and Danny Montes will be well represented in the trials with futurity winners Harem Bar Cartel and Ladys A Cartel, a pair of runners sired by 2013 Ed Burke Million Futurity winner and champion Five Bar Cartel. Harem Bar Cartel won the 350-yard Firecracker in :17.51 at Grants Pass in Oregon, but then had trouble in his Los Alamitos debut in the trials to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity. Ladys A Cartel easily won the Pot O’ Gold at 300 yards, but then broke slow on the way to running fourth in the Tolltac. She goes from an outside post to the post number one in her trial and she’s done well when drawing an inside post position.

Keith Nellesen’s Jess Send It could be one of the fillies to shine on Sunday. She crossed the wire first in her PCQHRA Breeders Futurity trial, but was disqualified and placed third. The talent is there for this Corona Cartel filly to deliver a big effort against a solid field that also includes Ladys A Cartel, Dixie Futurity runner-up Kis My Bit, and Oneida County Fair Futurity runner-up Dashing Candy Girl.
