Ali Returns and Hall of Fame Connections Highlight Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity at Canterbury
Canterbury Park will host their final two Quarter Horse stakes, the $55,200 Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby and the $55,900 Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity, of the season on Sunday's race card.

Ali Returns and Hall of Fame Connections Highlight Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity at Canterbury

SHAKOPEE, MN—SEPTEMBER 1, 2018—The 2018 Quarter Horse meet at Canterbury Park officially comes to a close with the final two Quarter Horse stakes on Sunday (Sep 2).

The two stakes are restricted to Minnesota-breds and are part of the annual Festival of Champions, a day of state-bred stakes races highlighting the best of both breeds bred in Minnesota.

The card begins with the $55,200 Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby and continues with the $55,900 Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity.

Eight Minnesota-bred 2-year-olds will line up in the gate for the Futurity in a wide-open field. The morning-line favorite is Ali Returns (5-2), trained by Ed Hardy and ridden by Ry Eikleberry for owner and breeder Rodney Von Ohlen. Rodney and his wife, Sylvia, who passed away earlier this year, are members of the 2018 inductee class to the Canterbury Park Hall of Fame.

Ali Returns is a 2-year-old filly by High Rate of Return, out of the Shazoom mare Alikazam. She debuted at Canterbury and broke her maiden in a sharp effort at 350 yards, the same distance as Sunday’s futurity, and defeated several horses will return to run in the same event.

Haute Wagon and jockey Marcus Swiontek will break from the rail for owner and breeder Shelly Berkner. The Vic Hanson-trainee was the heavy favorite to the Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity at Canterbury Park in June and finished second behind Bhr Flashing Effort.

Haute Wagon is by Wagons West, out of Chics Timeto Fling, by Timeto Get Tuff.

Trs Boy Named Sue will break from post five with Patrick Canchari aboard for trainer Jerry Livingston. The Knud With Wings colt is out of the Bully Bullion mare Whereshesupposedtobe, making him a full brother to multiple stakes placed Gramma Ella. Trs Boy Named Sue is owned and bred by Terry Reed, and recently broke his maiden by a half-length despite a troubled gate start.

The $55,900 Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity is Race 2 on Sunday at Canterbury Park. Estimated post time is 1:13 pm CT.
