Three Canterbury Futurity Winners Headline NCQHRA Trials

SHAKOPEE, MN—JULY 20, 2018—Some of the top 2-year-olds at Canterbury will make their way to the gate on Sunday in trials for the $44,725 North Central Quarter Horse Racing Association Futurity. Four trials will determine the field for the 350-yard final on Saturday, August 11.

The trials include all three winners of the 2018 2-year-old stakes to date at Canterbury Park: the $146,400 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity, the $20,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile, and the $30,305 Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity.

The first trial features the winner of the first 2-year-old stakes of the season. #6 Bhr Flashing Effort (3-1) won the Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity in June and also qualified for the Northlands, though he broke slowly and failed to make up ground in the final.

Trained by Bob Johnson for owners and breeders Broken Heart Ranch in South Dakota, the gray colt was a mild upset in the $30,305 MSBF after debuting in the $15,000 South Dakota-bred Futurity. Jake Samuels will be aboard for the trial, as he was for the Northlands Futurity.

The 5-2 morning line favorite, #3 Dashing Fajita, was most recently seen finishing third in the Northlands Juvenile. The One Famous Eagle filly ran sixth behind Bhr Flashing Effort in their Northlands trial.

Dashing Fajita is owned and bred by Brenda Reiswig, out of the Corona Cartel mare Anita Fajita. Vic Hanson trains; Ismael Suarez Ricardo has the call.

#3 Mildred Didrickson (2-1), fastest qualifier to the Northlands, returns in the second trial after placing fifth in the final. Nakia Ramirez returns to ride for trainer Jason Pascoe and owner Milena Kwiecien. The Desirio filly broke her maiden by a length at Remington Park with a 93 speed index before winning her Northlands trial.

The second trial also includes the winner of the Northlands Juvenile, #7 Zoes Sassy Miracle (3-1). The Capo de Capi filly lost her first two races by only a nose, including her trial to the Northlands. Julian Serrano, aboard in her Juvenile win, will return again for trainer Mark Barnes.

The horse to watch in the third trial is #4 Mansory (4-1), ridden by Ismael Suarez Ricardo for trainer Vic Hanson. Sired by Ivory James and out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Sinuous, Mansory is a full brother to multiple stakes-placed Marfilmio. Marfilmio was second in the NCQHRA last year and has qualified to two derbies in 2018, placing third in the Gopher State Derby at Canterbury in June.

The winner of the $146,400 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity, #9 Jess Doin Time (9-5), returns in the last of four trials on Sunday.

Jess Doin Time won the Northlands as the only Minnesota-bred in the field, and was just the fourth MN-bred to win in the futurity’s 31-year history.

The Apollitical Jess filly is trained by leading trainer Jason Olmstead and will be ridden by the current meet leading rider, Cristian Esqueda.

The NCQHRA trials start in Race 2 at Canterbury Park on Sunday, July 22. Post time for the first trial is 1:13 pm CT; post time for the first race of the day is 12:45 pm CT.

The 2018 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse stakes schedule includes 16 stakes races worth over $660,000.

Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Saturday, September 15, 2018. Beginning in August, there will be no live racing on Sundays, as the track adds live racing every Wednesday night for the month. Quarter horse racing is held at the beginning of each race card.
