SHAKOPEE, MN—JULY 5, 2018vThe best day of Quarter Horse racing at Canterbury Park kicks off with the $40,000 Bob Morehouse Stakes Sunday. The 350-yard event is restricted to Minnesota-breds aged three and up and is headlined by one of the top money-earning Minnesota-bred Quarter Horses in Canterbury Park history, Pyc Jess Bite Mydust.

Pyc Jess Bite Mydust won the $165,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity in 2016 as the only Minnesota-bred in the field. The son of Apollitical Jess has racked up over $167,000 in career earnings, including a win in the $50,000 Minnesota Derby in 2017 and an appearance in the Grade 1 Southwest Juvenile Championship at Zia as a 2-year-old.

Cristian Esqueda will be aboard for Sunday’s race and Jason Olmstead trains for owner and breeder Lunderborg LLC. Bruce and Judy Lunderborg bred Pyc Jess Bite Mydust out of their Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Paint Or More.

In an interesting turn of events, Pyc Jess Bite Mydust will have to face his own full brother, Dickey Bob. The accomplished younger brother shares the same connections but will be ridden by Denny Velazquez. Velazquez was aboard Dickey Bob for his 2017 campaign at Canterbury Park that included a win in the $51,000 Minnesota Futurity. Dickey Bob and Pyc Jess Bite Mydust have drawn next to each other in posts 5 and 6.

Also entered for Sunday is Blacks Cartel, who was second in this race last year before winning the restricted $41,000 Cash Caravan. When she is not facing Minnesota-breds, Blacks Cartel can be found in multiple graded stakes, including the Junos Request (G2) at Remington and the Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) at Prairie Meadows.

It is all in the family for Blacks Cartel, who is trained by Casey Black, owned by brother Tracy Black, and was bred by Don and Eileen Black. She will be ridden by Ismael Ricardo Suarez. Blacks Cartel is by Streakin Six Cartel, out of Brandi Whiz by Oh My Gee Whiz.

The $40,000 Bob Morehouse is Race 2 on Sunday, July 8. Estimated post time is 1:15 pm CT.

The 2018 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse stakes schedule includes 16 stakes races worth over $660,000. The 70-day race meet offers racing on Thursday and Friday evenings at 6:30 pm CT and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 12:45 pm CT. in June and July. Quarter horse racing is held at the beginning of each race card.
