1-2 Finishers In La Primera Return To Square Off In La Pacifica Handicap

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MAY 10, 2018—Parsons Ranch’s A Political Lady, the runaway winner in the Grade 3 La Primera Del Ano Derby on March 30, will go after her fifth win in a row when leading a field of eight fillies in the $30,000 La Pacifica Handicap at 350 yards on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Nine races are on tap with first post set for approximately 6:15 p.m.

Trained by Chris O’Dell, the filly by Apollitical Jess was sensational in the La Primera, leaving the gate in good form but dominating the second half of the race in route to an impressive 1-¼ length win in a 400-yard time of :19.71.

Her previous three wins had come in wire-to-wire fashion, including a daylight victory in her La Primera trial on March 10. A Political Lady, who began her winning streak in the $30,000 Los Alamitos Juvenile Invitational on December 17, will aim for stakes win number three of her 12-race career when she starts from the outside post eight on Saturday.

Eduardo Nicasio will pilot the Parsons-bred filly, who also finished third to AQHA champion 2-year-old J Fire Up in last year’s Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity.

John Firth’s Hard Headed Chick, the runner-up in the La Primera at 13-1 odds, is among the young ladies looking to end A Political Lady’s win streak.

Hard Headed Chick had the best outing of her 12-race career in the La Primera, as she lead at the start and held off the Grade 1 stakes placed filly Moonie Blues to grab second place honors.

Trained by Lin Melton, the Hard Hitting 3-year-old finished fourth to the undefeated AQHA champion 2-year-old colt KVN Corona in the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity last year. The Hard Hitting filly has won three starts and hit the board in seven starts. Cesar De Alba will pilot her from post number two.

Bill Absher and Leland Decker’s Chowchilla Chickadee, who caught the eye when scoring three straight daylight wins at the start of her career, will now make her second appearance in a stakes event when racing from along the rail in the La Pacifica. The Foose filly was third in the Corona Chick Handicap as a heavy favorite last year, but that outing came against a field that include top males like eventual winner Jesstacartel. Oscar Peinado will ride her for trainer John Cooper.

Mauro Eli Zaborowsky’s Yashira Vista, a major stakes winner in Brazil, will make her United States debut in the La Pacifica. The daughter of One Famous Eagle won the GP Consagracao da Triplice Coroa a 400 yards as a 2-year-old last October while racing at the Jockey Club Sorocaba in Brazil. She also won the Pareo Ease Highho at 300 yards and the Pareo Queen Darlin at 320 yards in Sorocaba. She won three of four starts in 2017.

On Our Way, a finalist in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, Terrific Temptation, the fastest qualifier to the La Primera and seventh place finisher in the final, Madam Of Fire MV, and La Sierran will complete the field.

The nine race card will also feature an $11,325 allowance event at 300-yards for 3-year-olds featuring La Primera finalists Pick A Favorite and Perfect Az Can Be; an $11,325 allowance event at 550-yards led by distance stars My Capullo and Bound To Bet and Grade 1 Southern California Derby finalist Well Good; and a pair of events for 2-year-olds featuring fields of 10 and nine horses.

The 2-year-olds in action will include the Favorite Cartel colt Provodnikov in the fourth race and the First Down Dash filly Wave Her Down in the sixth race. Provodnikov posted a flying :12.10 drill at 220 yards on April 28, while Wave Her Down had the fastest of 34 drills when working in :12.20 on April 24.

Wave Her Down is a full sister to AQHA World Champion Wave Carver and multiple champion Ocean Runaway. They both won the Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos.
