Outstanding 10-Horse Field Set For Kaweah Bar Handicap On Saturday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MAY 2, 2018—An attractive Late Pick Four sequence on Saturday night at Los Alamitos will be highlighted by an outstanding cast of 10 older horses squaring off in the running of the Grade 3, $30,000 Kaweah Bar Handicap.

Nine races are on tap for Saturday, which means that the Late Pick Four will begin in the sixth race of the night. Quarter Horse fields of six, nine, eight and 10 will be featured as part of this sequence.

The always popular Early Pick Four will get underway in the first race at approximately 6 p.m. with a field of seven Thoroughbreds racing in the opening leg and eight 2-year-old Quarter Horses headed by the promising New Girl and Razzel Dazzel wrapping up the final leg of the Early Pick Four in race number four.

Urschel 3-D Ranch LLC’s multiple stakes winner Rite Regal should be a major contender in the Kaweah Bar Handicap.

Jim Walker’s 2016 AQHA champion Zoomin For Spuds leads the outstanding Kaweah Bar lineup. To be ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala for trainer Monty Arrossa, Zoomin For Spuds will enter this race after defeating multiple Grade 1 winner BH Lisas Boy in the Moonist Handicap on March 25.

Zoomin For Spuds, the winner of the Champion of Champions during his championship campaign in 2016, also posted a strong runner-up effort to BH Lisas Boy in the Grade 1 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship earlier this year. The gelding by Zoomin For Bux has hit the board in six consecutive starts and in an impressive 26 of 28 lifetime outings to go along with 10 career wins. He’s earned $573,281 in his career.

"The horse is coming along real well," Arrossa said after the Moonist. "We turned him out last year and we were bringing him back and I didn’t think we had him that fit. He ran a good race (third in the 2017) Champion of Champions and ran a good race in the Los Alamitos Winter Championship, but we didn’t think that we had him quite fit to where we wanted him. He’s doing great right now. We made a few changes with him and the way we were training him. He’s responded well."

The field will also feature major stakes winners One Proud Eagle, Rite Regal, Unclaimed Dividend, and Mr Apollitical Dash. Graded stakes placed runners Flash N Bling, The Charm Of Corona, and Renewed, plus Royaltys Authority, who posted the meet’s fastest 330-yard clocking in his last start, and Arizona stakes winner Captain Takeoff will complete this super cast. This field has combined to earn over $2.2 million.

Urschel 3-D Ranch LLC’s Rite Regal is the second richest horse in this field with $391,967 from 12 wins in 21 careers starts. The Favorite Cartel gelding won the El Primero Del Ano Derby and Golden State Derby and was second in the Los Alamitos Super Derby in 2016. He also took part in Zoomin For Spuds’ Champion of Champions, when a tough break eliminated him from contention early in the race.

The Jose Flores-trainee made only three starts last year, but won the California Breeders Sprint Stakes in the process. He will enter this race after scoring a big half-length win on February 24 when overcoming a rough trip, but still winning easily at 300 yards. Cruz Mendez will ride.

Rancho El Cabresto, Inc’s Mr Apollitical Dash won the Grade 2 Southern California Derby last year, but was fifth in the Moonist in his 2018 debut, while One Proud Eagle won the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity in 2016 and three other stakes races since then. He’s the third leading money winner in this field with $320,796. Eddie Garcia will ride for trainer John Cooper.

EG High Desert Farms’ Unclaimed Dividend won the 2016 Governor’s Cup Derby and the A Ransom Handicap in 2016 and is always a tough customer to beat. He’ll start from post seven for trainer Jesus Nunez.

Royaltys Authority is the x-factor. He’s won his last two starts by daylight, including a 1-½ length romp at 330 yards in a meet’s best time of :16.45. Roman Figueroa trains for S & S Horses.
