Derby Runner-Up Black Fryday Heads Friday’s Feature Event

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MAY 2, 2018—Ron Hartley’s Black Fryday, who finished only a half-length behind undefeated champion KVN Corona when finishing second in the Grade 3 El Primero Del Ano Derby on March 31, will head the featured eighth-race on Friday night - an $11,325 allowance event at 330 yards. First post for the 8-race card is 7 pm (PDT).

To be ridden Cesar De Alba for trainer John Cooper, Black Fryday went over the $100,000 mark in career earnings with his second place finish in the El Primero.

The son of Favorite Cartel was fifth to champion J Fire Up in last year’s Golden State Million Futurity. He’ll enter this race having won two of nine career starts. He’ll start from the outside post six on Friday night.

His five rivals will be headed by Splendid Cause, who was sixth in the Grade 3 La Primera Del Ano Derby on March 30. The Apollitical Jess filly won the $30,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes last year and her $42,174 in career earnings makes her the richest horse in this field only behind Black Fryday.

Carlos Huerta will ride her for trainer Juan Aleman. El Primero Del Ano finalist Rockin Asteroid, the stakes placed Corona Thru Fire, and multiple winners McFarland USA and Kue Tip will complete the field.

Friday’s card will feature a pair of races for 2-year-olds at 300 yards. Fillies will be in action in the fifth race with a full field of 10 ready to dance.

This field will be headed by Duke Racing, LLC’s Run Happy, a Kentucky-bred filly who posted a solid :12.4 work on April 14. She’s from the family of the great Such An Easy Effort, who ran in 17 stakes races during a brilliant Grade 1 stakes winning career.

The field will also feature Paulo Otavio Freire Macedo’s Santa Monica MV, a filly by Corona Cartel out of Grade 1 winner Jess Significant. Santa Monica MV, who had the fourth fastest of 28 drills on April 17, is a full sister to 2014 AQHA champion aged mare and multiple graded stakes winner Significant Heart. Walk On By Blues, a full sister to stakes winner Walk Around Blues, will also compete in this race.

Ten other 2-year-olds will be in action in race seven with the Utah-bred gelding Corona By Corona among the top runners to watch. The Corona Cartel gelding posted the second fastest of 28 drills on April 17. Fire And Fury, a California-bred colt by Walk Thru Fire, is another top contender in this event. He sizzled with timed drill of :12.30 on April 12. Fire And Fury is from the family of Grade 1 winners Separate Fire and Meganette.

Other top contenders include Could Be Hotter, a full brother to multiple Grade 1 winner He Looks Hot and Grade 1 winner Once Over; and Golden Boy Gonza, a filly from the family of Grade 1 winner Dash To The End, Restricted Grade 1 winner Magic N Rhythm, and Grade 1 finalist Magical Latin Lover.
