SUNLAND PARK, NM--FEBRUARY 12, 2018--Imperial Eagle, a two-time champion son of One Famous Eagle racing for Christina D. Robinson, is one of 25 aged sprinters entered in Friday’s 400-yard West Texas Maturity (G3) trials at Sunland Park.
A 4-year-old gelding trained by Tony Sedillo, Imperial Eagle is coming off of a sophomore campaign during which he earned $92,100 from seven outs, and his three wins included a neck victory as the even-money favorite in the 400-yard, $100,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes at Ruidoso Downs in June.
In 2016 Imperial Eagle was named AQHA Racing's champion 2-year-old and 2-year-old gelding after winning the Grade 1 All American Futurity and Grade 1 Southwest Juvenile Championship. He has banked more than $1.8 million.
Imperial Eagle drew post 7 and will be ridden by Esgar Ramirez in the first of three trials.
Apollitical OK, a 5-year-old Apollitical Jess gelding trained by Joel Valeriano for owners Oscar Dominguez and Joel Martinez, drew post 5 and will be ridden by Ramirez in the second heat. Apollitical OK scored a half-length win in last year’s 400-yard, $50,000 Mr Jet Moore Handicap (G2) at Ruidoso.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the March 10, $65,000-added West Texas Maturity final.
