Thirty-Eight Horses In Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes Trials

LOS ALAMITOS, CA-JANUARY 26, 2018-Five trials featuring 38 Quarter Horses will be contested on Sunday evening with the horses with the 10 fastest times at 350 yards moving on to the $105,000 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes for 3-year-olds at Los Alamitos.

The Maiden Stakes final will be held on Sunday, February 18.

Horses are eligible to compete in the Maiden Stakes if they are maidens as of December 1, 2017. Eleven horses have broken their maiden since the cutoff date and several had previously competed in stakes finals.

The list of horses with stakes experience includes JGA Racing Stables, Inc.'s Shangrilalala, who finished fourth to stablemate Fire And Sass in the $304,000 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity on May 14.

Shangrilalala will be in action in race number five, which is the second of five Maiden Stakes trials. The daughter of leading sire Mr Jess Perry posted a runner-up effort in her trial to the Kindergarten last year.

She also hit the board in her two other starts in 2017. She was third to PCQHRA 2-year-old gelding of the year Chance To Fire in their Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity trial and was second to PCQHRA Intermountain horse of the year Moonie Blues in their Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity trials.

Moonie Blues went on to finish second in the Grade 1 Two Million. Carlos Huerta will ride Shangrilalala from post number four on Sunday night.

Pazazz Quarterhorses Ltd's A Cajun Diva is the only previous winner in this event. The Jess Louisiana Blue filly broke her maiden by a half-length against $10,000 maiden claimers on this meet's opening night on December 29.

The opening Maiden Stakes trial will feature a pair of previous winners in Two Feather Series LLC's Miss Zoomin Lady and Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas' Fury Of Innocence.

The third trial will include a pair of futurity finalists in Denny and Sandy Weigt's Pyc Paint Your Wagon Kindergarten finalist Missmerizing and Encarnacion Baez's Arizona QRA Futurity finalists BP Southern Hero by Valiant Hero.

The final two trials will feature Ed Allred's Light Of The Moon, a Walk Thru Fire filly who has shown quick breaking ability and most recently broke her maiden on December 3. Edward and Theresa DeNike and David Miller's Power Thinker, a winner here on December 29 despite a troubled start, will also be in action in this race. He is also by Walk Thru Fire.

The Denike's will have another good looking runner in action in the form of the Washington-bred Carters Cartel gelding Lothbrok in the final heat. He broke his maiden on December 2 but then had a less than perfect outing when lugging out and running fifth against Grade 1 finalist Black Fryday in an allowance on December 29.

Allred's recent winner Top The Sale is another one to watch. The Maiden Stakes trials will be races four through eight on Sunday.
