Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Winner Kvn Corona Heads PCQHRA Breeders Futurity Trials on Sunday Night

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—SEPTEMBER 15, 2017—Keith Nellesen’s undefeated star KVN Corona will make his first start since winning the Grade 1 $1,000,000 Ed Burke Million Futurity when he headlines the sixth of 10 trials to the $400,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity Sunday at Los Alamitos.

A total of 76 juveniles will be in action in the 350-yard trials, which will include 29 runners with experience in stakes action. The horses with the 10 fastest times will advance to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity final to be held on October 7.

The big name in the trials is the outstanding KVN Corona, a gray colt by Corona Cartel, who defeated Governor’s Cup Futurity winner J Fire Up by a head to win the Ed Burke Million. KVN Corona entered the final after winning his trial by a half-length and his maiden race by 1-1/4 lengths.

"The horse has been training really well," trainer Paul Jones said. "We’ve kept him in light training (since the Ed Burke). We have not raced since because we wanted to save him to have something left for the end of the year. This will be his first start since the Ed Burke final. The horse is training really well. He has two good works underneath him and hopefully it’ll make a nice start for him."

KVN Corona is eligible to compete in the Golden State Million Futurity trials and Ed Burke Million Futurity trials later to be held later this season.

The first trial of the night will be headed by Mark and Peggy Brown’s Jess My Kiss, whose last start also came in the Ed Burke Million Futurity. The gelding by One Sweet Jess ran second in the trials to the Ed Burke to KVN Corona and will now break from post number in the opening trial while taking on a field that includes Parsons Family Limited Partnership’s Terrific Dynasty. The FDD Dynasty gelding will be going after his third straight win.

Jose Flores and Steve Mickaelian’s Apollitical Stone will head the second trial and the gelding will be looking to make his third stakes final of the year. The son of Apollitical Jess ran a terrific fourth in the Ed Burke final and was a game second in the John Deere California Juvenile Challenge final on August 19. He’ll face Ed Allred’s Tustin Kid, who’ll enter this trial fresh off of his victory in the California Breeders Freshman Stakes.

Allred’s Kindergarten Futurity finalist Seems Even Better will head the third heat, while Parsons Ranch’s A Political Lady, who won her Ed Burke Million trial, will head the fourth heat. The fifth trial is one of the best on the card with the likes of Governor’s Cup Futurity third place finisher The Revenant facing Governor’s Cup finalist Effortless Effort and Kindergarten finalist Perfect Az Can Be.

Erik Flores’ Governors Cup finalist Knockout Jess will be in action in the seventh, while Howard Nichols’ stakes placed La Rusa will head a wide open eighth trial that will also feature McFarland USA, Moonie Blues, and Worker just to mention a few.

Jones and Thompson Racing’s Summertime Favorite, third in the Kindergarten Futurity, will head the ninth trial, while Paulo O. Freire’s talented King Of Appeals will head the 10th and final trial.
