LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JULY 24, 2017—One of the most prestigious Quarter Horse racing nights of the year is on tap, as the 18th running of California Breeders Champions Night will offer a full evening of stakes races on Saturday, July 29 at Los Alamitos Race Course.

The stakes action will be headed by the running of the $390,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity at 350-yards, and will be headed by the Chris O’Dell-trained duo of fastest qualifier Chance To Fire and second fastest qualifier Effortless Effort. Darling Farms’ J Fire Up, the runner-up in the Ed Burke Million Futurity, will also be part of the Governor’s Cup Futurity. The $203,000 Governor’s Cup Derby will be the top races for 3-year-olds on Champions Night, and will be headed by 2016 Governor’s Cup Futurity winner AJS Anna Smoke and multiple Grade 1 finalist Katella Deli.

To go along with Governor’s Cup Series, a full card of stakes will be contested as part of Champions Night. California Breeders Champions Night, which will once again serve as a showcase event for the finest California-bred runners in training. Featuring combined purses of $950,000, the event is the product of joint cooperation between the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association and track management at Los Alamitos Race Course.

The $100,000 Spencer L. Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap is the main event for 3-year-old and upward and is expected to feature 2015 World Champion Quarter Horse Heza Dasha Fire. Twelve horses were nominated to the Spencer Childers and could also feature the millionaire and multiple Grade 1 winner He Looks Hot. The 2016 running went to Flay, the first 3-year-old to win the Spencer Childers since Be A Bono in 2004.

The $25,000 Jens List Jr. Memorial California Breeders Stakes for 3-year-olds could feature El Primero Del Ano Derby winner Stelfast and perhaps the debut of Golden State Million Futurity runner-up Tarzanito.

Eleven sophomores were nominated to the Jens List. The $40,000 California Breeders Matron Stakes has 10 distaffers nominated, and includes stakes winners Nymph, Bemused, Zendaya, Maggie Durant, and Thermonuclear Energy.

Eighteen horses were nominated to the $25,000 Sprint Stakes for older horses and could feature solid veteran performers like Ramiro Zuazo’s De Moss and Boylike, Kolleen Ledgerwood’s Scholarly, winner of the Freshman Stakes for Fillies on this night last year, heads the nominees to this year’s $25,000 Debutante Stakes for sophomore fillies.

Ten were nominated to the $20,000 550-Yard Sophomore Stakes, while a total of 17 freshman runners were nominated to a pair of $25,000 Freshman Stakes divisions. Three claiming stakes races will complete the Champions Night card. For more info, call 714-820-2690.
