LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JANUARY 20, 2017—Newly crowned AQHA champion and reigning Champion of Champions winner Zoomin For Spuds will headline the trials to the Grade 1, $150,900 Los Alamitos Winter Championship on Sunday night at Los Alamitos.

The trials were originally scheduled for last Sunday, but had to be rescheduled following a storm that led to the cancellation of last Sunday’s program.

The same 17 runners will be in action with the fastest 10 advancing to the Winter Championship final on Sunday, February 12. The Winter Championship winner will earn the first automatic starting berth to the 2017, $600,000 Champion of Champions to be held on Saturday, December 16.

Trained by Monty Arrossa for owner Jim Walker, Zoomin For Spuds enjoyed a spectacular campaign at Los Alamitos in 2016. The now 4-year-old Zoomin For Bux gelding won six of seven starts at the Orange County oval last year with all six wins coming in stakes races. He won the Champion of Champions and also the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap, Costa Mesa Handicap, Fullerton Handicap, Wrangler Stakes and a Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Trial. His outstanding campaign earned him the title of AQHA champion 3-year-old gelding. Jesus Rios Ayala will ride him from post seven in the first of two Winter Championship trials.

The opening trial will also feature 2015 champion 2-year-old gelding Ima Fearless Hero, a Valiant Hero winner of $1,055,292 in his career, plus Town Policy Handicap winner Stevie B First Cash, Spencer Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap Flay and five other top competitors.

The second trial will be headed by 2016 Champion of Champions finalists He Looks Hot and Rite Regal.

Owned by Ed Allred and trained by Scott Willoughby, He Looks Hot won the Grade 1 Vessels Maturity last year and the 2014 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity.

Urschel 3-D Ranch LLC’s Favorite Cartel gelding Rite Regal won seven of 11 starts at Los Alamitos last year including the El Primero Del Ano Derby, Golden State Derby and a Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Trial.

This race will also feature Tom Atwood and John Wells’ two-time Grade 1 winner Far Niente and Bill Hoburg’s BH Lisas Boy, which ran second in three major Grade 1 stakes races last year.
