Outstanding Card Set Saturday For California Breeders Champions' Night

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JULY 25, 2016—One of the most prestigious Quarter Horse racing nights of the year is on tap as the 17th running of California Breeders Champions' Night will offer a full evening of stakes races on Saturday (July 30).

The racing action will be headed by the running of the $395,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity, which features a pair of Ed Burke Million Futurity finalists in the form of Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity runner-up Worth Doing and the winning machine AJS Annas Smoke, plus the $200,000 Governor’s Cup Derby headed by fastest qualifier Fervents Dynasty and Phoebes Dynasty, winner of the Governor’s Cup Futurity last year.

To go along with Governor’s Cup Series, 11 stakes will be contested as part of Champions Night. The card is expected to feature a total of three Pick Four wagering opportunities. The early Pick Four, the middle Pick Four, and the late Pick Four featuring the final four races on the card.

California Breeders Champions Night will once again serve as a showcase event for the finest California-bred runners in training. Featuring combined purses of $1 million, the event is the product of joint cooperation between the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association and track management at Los Alamitos Race Course.

The Spencer L. Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap is the main event for older horses and will feature a purse of $100,000. The field is expected to be headlined by Grade 1 Vessels Maturity winner He Looks Hot, a superstar closing in on over $1 million in career earnings. Three-time derby winner Forget It has also been nominated to this event. While the fields to the Governor’s Cup Futurity and Governor’s Cup Derby were set during trial races on the weekend of July 9 and 10, and the Spencer Childers attracts many of the top older horses on the grounds, horses in various racing divisions were nominated to the other stakes events that make up Champions Night on Friday, July 22.

The result is an outstanding night of Quarter Horse racing with top stars like Grade 1 winner Quirky and two-time derby winner Bac In Front heading the Matron Stakes and multiple stakes finalist Romantic Fire competing in the Jens List Memorial Stakes for 3-year-olds. The program will include feature the $25,000 Freshman Stakes and $25,000 Freshman Stakes for Fillies, plus the 550 Yard Sophomore Stakes and a series of claiming stakes races.
