Champion Mare Heads Las Damas Handicap On Saturday Night

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—NOVEMBER 19, 2015—Champion aged mare Significant Heart will look to defend her Las Damas Handicap title when she faces six younger foes in Saturday’s featured race for fillies and mares at 400 yards. The Grade 3 Las Damas Handicap will offer a $25,000 purse and is scheduled as the ninth and final race on Saturday night. First post is 6 p.m.

It’s hard to believe that the ultra-talented Signifcant Heart has yet to win in 2015.

Trained by Paul Jones for Abigail Kawananakoa, Significant Heart’s last win came in the Las Damas Handicap a year ago, but in her defense she does have third place finishes in both the Grade 2 Charger Bar Handicap and Cash For Kas Handicap. In her only other outing of the year, Significant Heart had a very troubled start and had to settle for fifth place against a quality field in the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap on September 27.

The daughter of Corona Cartel could revert back to her great form of 2014 at any moment and should not be discounted in any race. Eduardo Nicasio will pilot Significant Heart from post number five.

Ed Allred’s Take A Look and Nancy Scane’s Skinny Jeans are two rising stars in the division. The two sophomore fillies have won each won a stakes race this year and finished 1-2 in the La Pacifica Handiacp earlier this season.

Take A Look, the winner of the La Pacifica, also ran fourth when facing the boys in the Los Alamitos Super Derby and was second in the La Primera Del Ano Derby. She is a daughter of champion sire Separatist.

The Foose filly Skinny Jeans won the Luva Secret Handicap and was third in the La Primera to go along with her runner-up effort in the La Pacifica.

The rest of the Las Damas field will include Debutante Stakes winner and Luva Secret runner-up Blabber, three-time stakes placed mare Bring Me Home, recent allowance winner Apolitical Zoom, and Political Chick, which posted a huge race in the Luva Secret when she improved from seventh place to finish fourth in the Luva Secret.
