$634,530 Lee Berwick Futurity Highlights Tremendous Delta Downs Closing Program Tonight

VINTON, LA—JULY 11, 2015—Delta Downs will conduct its final closing night of American Quarter Horse racing for 2015 tonight (Saturday) with the Louisiana Showcase, featuring eight stakes races for Louisiana-bred horses and the year’s richest offering, the $634,530 Lee Berwick Memorial Louisiana-bred Futurity (RG1). Post times is 6:15 pm Central Time.

The Lee Berwick, named in honor of the man who built Delta Downs in Vinton, Louisiana 42 years ago, will feature a field of 10 talented 2-year-olds who qualified for the second richest Quarter Horse race in track history back on June 20. The fastest qualifier was The Renaissance Man, who is trained by Kenneth L. Roberts, Sr. Roberts is seeking his fourth consecutive leading trainer title and his seventh in the Boyd Gaming era at Delta Downs. Roberts enters the week ranked second in the standings just two wins shy of Michael Taylor.

The Renaissance Man’s main competition on Saturday night may come from a young filly who burst onto the scene earlier this year. Jessa Louisiana Zoom’s resume is perfect with three wins in as many starts and an impressive score in the $273,977 Louisiana Lassie Futurity on May 15. The Frank Cavasos trainee qualified for the Lee Berwick with the third fastest time of 17.535 seconds compared The Renaissance Man, who stopped the timer in 17.517 for 350 yards.

The second richest race on tonight (Saturday) will be the $217,640 Delta Downs Derby for 3-year-olds competing at 400 yards. The fastest qualifier for the Derby is the Kenneth L. Roberts, Sr. trainee Heza Louisiana Dash. The highest earner in the Derby field is Jes a Fast Dasher, who has banked just over $269,000 on five wins from eight career starts.

Race fans will be treated to a very talented field go postward in this year’s $100,000 Louisiana Classic at 440 yards. The Classic attracted stars such as millionaire Jls Mr Bigtime; 2014 Classic winner Fast Talkin Henry; new track record setter Jessjinging; and Open Me a Corona, who will attempt to win his third stakes race of the season after scoring victories in the Vals Fortune and John Alleman Stakes just a few weeks ago.
