Top Horses Set For Los Alamitos Winter Derby Trials On Saturday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JANAURY 22, 2015—Governor’s Cup Futurity winner Discontent and Grade 1 futurity finalists Wild Sixes Cartel, Forget It, and Hot Shot are among the 34 sophomores that will compete in the trials to the Grade 1 $208,850 Los Alamitos Winter Derby on Saturday night. First post time is 6 p.m. with the trials scheduled as races four through eight on the card.

The horses with the 10 fastest times in the trials will move on to the Winter Derby final on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14. While love will be in the air on the night of the final, the night of the trials will be a heated battle between many of the top 3-year-olds on the grounds. Ed Allred’s Discontent will headline the opening trial of the night, as the dashing gray gelding by Separatist will face a strong group of rivals in the 400-yard race. The field will include Corona Chick Handicap winner A Goddess Thru Fire and RTM Stables and George Weldon’s Ynot Walk, the winner of the John Deere California Juvenile and Los Alamitos Juvenile Invitational Stakes.

Ridden by Carlos Huerta and trained by Scott Willoughby, Discontent has won four of seven career starts. His biggest victory came on California Breeders Champions Night when he took home the $352,000 Governor’s Cup, but he also posted a daylight victory in his trial to the Golden State Million Futurity on October 19. Discontent has not raced since that trial effort and he’ll come into this race after posting a 350-yard gate work in :18.30 on December 30. The homebred will start post number one. Abigail Kawananakoa’s A Goddess Thru Fire won the Corona Chick in her last start, but she also posted a solid second place finish to the highly regarded BF Farm Boss in the $375,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity. A Goddess Thru Fire has won four of six career outings.

Lisa Beauprez, Tom Bradbury and Tom Bradbury, Jr.’s Wild Sixes Cartel will headline the second trial of the night. The colt by Corona Cartel ran second in the Grade 2 $261,000 Kindergarten Futurity at Los Alamitos and also qualified to the Grade 1 Rainbow Futurity at Ruidoso Downs. He was second to Forget It in the trials to the Los Alamitos Two Million in his last start. Robert Williams’ Face The Mark will headline the third trial for trainer Charles Treece. The Mark My Dial gelding was a 1 1/4 length Two Million trial winner and was fourth in the Los Alamitos Juvenile Invitational.

Kolleen Ledgerwood’s Hot Shot, who ran in the Ed Burke and also the Governor’s Cup, will start to the inside of Face The Mark in what could develop into a great duel between the two. Allred’s Cartels Big Gun and Jumonville Farms and Brian Ranch’s Dutcher are candidates to enjoy breakout efforts on trial night. They’ll face each other in the fourth trial. Dutch Masters III and Jaime Gomez’s Forget It will head the final trial after running in the Grade 1 Ed Burke and Grade 1 Two Million last year at Los Alamitos.
