California Breeders' Champions Night Set For Saturday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA— JULY 21, 2014—One of the most prestigious Quarter Horse racing nights of the year is on tap as California Breeders Champions Night will offer a full evening of stakes races on Saturday, July 26.

The racing action will be headed by the running of the $350,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity, which features a powerful quartet of runners owned by Edward C. Allred, and the $198,000 Governor’s Cup Derby, which will be led by fastest qualifier Foose Is Loose.

To go along with Governor’s Cup Series, 12 stakes will be contested as part of Champions Night with 173 horses nominated to these races. That figure represents a 22% increase in the number of total nominees to last year’s Champions Night. In some instances, a horse was nominated to more than one race, just as was the case last year.

The Spencer L. Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap is the main event for older horses and will feature a purse of $100,000. Among the 16 horses nominated to the Spencer Childers is Allred’s Once Over, who finished second in this event last year.

The 15th running of California Breeders Champions Night will once again serve as a showcase event for the finest California-bred runners in training. Featuring combined purses of over $920,000, the event is the product of joint cooperation between the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association and track management at Los Alamitos Race Course.

While the fields to the Governor’s Cup Futurity and Governor’s Cup Derby were set during trial races on the weekend of July 12 and 13, horses were nominated to the other 12 races that make up Champions Night. The highest number of nominees can be found in the Debutante Stakes, as 22 sophomore fillies were nominated to the 350-yard race. Major 2013 futurity finalists Composed Charisma, Diamonds N Dynasty, and Quirky are among the Debutante nominees.

Sixteen runners were nominated to the Spencer Childers Championship Handicap at 400 yards headed by the multiple stakes winner Once Over, 2014 Charger Bar Handicap winner Native Tea Rose and 2012 El Primero Del Ano Derby winner New Look.

Fire Cliff, who ran second in this year’s El Primero Del Ano, multiple stakes winning veterans Forrest Fire and High School Secrets, plus rising star Mesa Marvel are among the other horses nominated.

The Matron Stakes nominees include Native Tea Rose and 2012 Governor’s Cup Futurity winner Secretly Hot. Local stakes winner Splendiferous Diva, and 2013 Debutante Stakes winner Chics On Fire. Sixteen runners were nominated to the $25,000 Sprint Stakes including 12 that were also nominated to the Spencer Childers.

The program will include feature four claiming stakes races.

Champions Night will also feature a Los Alamitos Cap giveaway. Five stylish colors will be available for on-track fans with a paid nighttime admission. Giveaway will be held while supplies last.
