Oklahoma Speedfest Features Three Stakes For Oklahoma-Breds

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 23, 2013—The second-annual Oklahoma Speedfest program of stakes races for eligible Oklahoma-bred American Quarter Horses is Sunday at Remington Park. A trio of $50,000 races for Speedfest was put together in the Remington Park racing office this morning, led by the Jack Brooks Stakes, a restricted Grade 3 affair.

At 350 yards, for 3-year-old Oklahoma-breds, the Jack Brooks drew a field of 10 with many accomplished participants. The race is named after the Hall of Fame trainer who won eight All American Futurities during his career and three Remington Park seasonal training titles. Brooks, a Blanchard, Okla. native, won 25 Remington Park stakes races overall, third on the all-time list here.

Llano Cartel, a three-time winner during the Remington Park season, seeks his first stakes triumph of the year. Owned by Wade Helton of Pampa, Texas and trained by Alfredo Gomez, Llano Cartel won his trial for the Oklahoma Derby before finishing sixth in the $136,000 final. The Teller Cartel gelding then won a conditioned allowance race before running third in the Grade 2, $50,000 Bob Moore Memorial Stakes. Just eight days after the stakes placing, Llano Cartel blasted away to win the 110-yard ‘Blink of An Eye’ handicap on April 28.

Llano Cartel drew post position three in the Jack Brooks and will be ridden for the first time this season by Omar Reyes. A winner of four career races from 14 attempts, Llano Cartel has three wins at Remington Park.

BP Cartels Alibi, the winner of the Grade 1, $1,000,000 Heritage Place Futurity in 2012, drew post-position four. Owned by Raymundo Villareal, Jr. of Mission, Texas and trained by Trey Wood, BP Cartels Alibi will be ridden for the first time by Larry Payne in the Jack Brooks Stakes. The Corona Cartel colt is seeking his first top-three finish in 2013 with his best result of the season through two attempts, a fourth-place run in the Mr Master Bug Handicap on April 21.

BP Cartels Alibi has career earnings of $535,308 thanks in large part to his Heritage Place Futurity win and a seventh-place effort in the 2012 $2.4 Million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs, N.M. His total bankroll is by far the largest of any of the Jack Brooks contenders.

Once-defeated PYC Kant Katch Me drew post number seven for what could be his only attempt of the Remington Park season. Yet to start in 2012, PYC Kant Katch Me is owned by JNB Enterprises of Mission, Texas and trained by Judd Kearl. Jockey Rodrigo Vallejo has been named to ride the career earner of $190,915. The Pyc Paint Your Wagon colt leads all Jack Brooks contenders with five career victories.

Feature Hero, the runner-up to Brace For Bernal in the $253,000 Remington Park Derby in April, drew post-position eight for Reliance Ranches of Llano, Texas. Trained by Eddie Willis, Fature Hero will be ridden by regular pilot Jimmy Brooks. The gelded son of Valiant Hero has finished out of the money just twice in his 10 lifetime events and boasts earnings of $124,518.

The Jack Brooks Stakes is the 11th of 12 races on Oklahoma Speedfest Sunday. The $50,000 FL Lady Bug Stakes, for 2-year-olds at 330 yards, is the ninth race on the card with the $50,000 Easy Date Handicap, for older fillies and mares at 350 yards, slotted as the 10th race.

Remington Park’s holiday racing weekend runs Friday thru Memorial Day, May 24-27. The first race is 6pm on Friday and Saturday with racing underway at 1:30pm for Oklahoma Speedfest Sunday and Memorial Day Monday.
