AURORA, CO—AUGUST 13, 2017—With an impressive sweeping run on the outside, Flare for Ivory defeated Attack the Wind by a neck in the $24,825 Arapahoe Park Sprint Bonus Challenge.

Final time for the 300-yard race was 15.420, breaking the previous track record of 15.432, set in May by none other than Flare for Ivory.

Flare for Ivory ($5.00) was the heavy favorite despite a layoff since that record-breaking win in the Dash for Speed Stakes in May. The colt competed in the West Texas Maturity (G2) at Sunland earlier this year and was fourth in the 2016 Heritage Place Derby (G1). With six wins in 17 starts, Flare for Ivory has now earned over $90,000.

Tanner Thedford had the call for Sunday’s Bonus Challenge for trainer Jose Manuel Barron and owners Hugo Barron Sierra and Marguerita Melendez; Thedford also rode the colt in his previous Arapahoe win.

Vaughn and Jill Cook bred the colt in Oklahoma, by Ivory James, out of multiple graded stakes winning mare Special Phoebe, by Special Effort.

Attack the Wind and jockey Daniel Valles broke on top and led at the start of the race along the rail before Flare for Ivory caught them at the wire. Eliazar Salas trains for owner Cesar Nunez. The Walk Thru Fire gelding was bred in California by Steve D Burns Dvm, out of stakes winner Attack the Cartel, by Corona Cartel.

Attack the Wind qualified for the West Texas Derby at Sunland earlier this year and competed in the Animas Stakes at SunRay Park in April before shipping to Arapahoe, where he was undefeated in his first two Colorado starts.

A gap of nearly two lengths separated the top two finishers from the rest of the pack, but Hearts Ona Hero led the rest of the field with Manuel Meza aboard. Miguel Pena trains the Valiant Hero gelding for owner Santos Lopez. Hearts Ona Hero was bred in Oklahoma by Homer Hill, out of the Dashin Is Easy mare Dashing Uno, who placed in multiple graded stakes.

Hearts Ona Hero has finished third in both starts at Arapahoe, following stakes appearances at Remington and Hialeah.

Completing the field were Silver Citizen, Sweet Solid Rock, Unforgiven B, The Midnite Caller and Stormy Red Morning.
