Challenge Horsemen Earn Year-End Challenge Awards

Q-RACING JOURNAL—OCTOBER 18, 2014— Horsemen who compete in the Bank of America Racing Challenge vie not only for individual race honors, purses and prizes, nor only for the chance to run in the Bank of America Challenge Championships, which distributes more than $1 million in purse and prizes. They also compete for year-end honors as the program’s leading owner, breeder, trainer and jockey.

The 2013 leading owner and leading trainer, Dean Frey this year captured the John Deere Champion Owner award.

As the winning owner, Frey will receive a John Deere Gator utility vehicle and a custom buckle from Montana Silversmiths.

Frey dominated the division, as he earned 114 points over the year. Martha Wells was second, with 48 points. Among his horses were Merial Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) contender Shez Jess Toxic and John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) contender Jaymee Love.

Champion breeder Bobby Cox was the Nutrena Champion Breeder, earning 159 points over the year.

As the winner, Cox will earn $5,000 in cash, three tons of Nutrena feed and a custom Montana Silversmiths buckle.

Cox, based in Fort Worth, Texas, has among his horses Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship (G1) contender Wahoo.

Dr. Steve Burns was second as the breeder with 86 points.

Northwest trainer Monty Arrossa won a narrow 144-142 victory over Dean Frey to take the award as Farnam Champion Trainer.

Among Arrossa’s trainees are the likes of John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) contender Jess Curl My Prize.

Arrossa wins $5,000 cash, a Double J saddle, a custom Montana Silversmiths buckle and various Farnam products.

Champion jockey G.R. Carter Jr. also became the Wrangler Champion Jockey by the narrowest of decisions.

Both Carter and Francisco Calderon earned 84 points during the year, but Carter won the tie based on his number of race wins. As the winner, Carter earns $2,000 cash, a Double J saddle and a custom buckle from Montana Silversmiths.
