California Invader Sets Top Mark in Merial Northwest Distaff Trials

KENNEWICK, WA—APRIL 20, 2014—Coming off a third-place effort in the Cypress Handicap at Los Alamitos last January, Chicks Special Angel won the second of two trials and set the fastest qualifying time for the Merial Northwest Distaff Challenge at Sun Downs.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to the Pacific Northwest racetrack on Sunday, May 4 to vie for the winner's portion of a $15,000-added purse going 400 yards.

Also at stake is an invite for the winner to participate in the $125,000-Guranteed Merial Distaff Challenge Championship(G1) to be run October 18th during the Bank of America Challenge Championship Night at Prairie Meadows.

Ridden by Never T. Marin, Chicks Special Angel covered the 400 yard course in :19.670 seconds, a 110 speed index, to win by one-length and set the top mark. Juan Sanguino saddled the 6-year-old Chickspecialmongoose mare for owner Miguel Sanguino.

It was the 12th win in 19 career starts for the Oregon-bred miss from the Super Bowl Dash mare Cff Plain Jane. Richard and Fern Wilde bred the earner of $32,694.

Ms Eaves, a 4-year-old daughter of leading sire Tres Seis, finished second to Chicks Special Angel while posting the second fastest clocking of :19.800, a 106 speed index. Monty Arrossa saddled the stakes winner of $42,4567 for owner Gerardo Prado. Christine Hudson bred Ms Eaves in Texas from the Chicks Beduino mare Little Ms Tuff Stuff. Cesar DeAlba had the riding call.

Eduardo Montes' Shake Wide Open kicked off her 4-year-old campaign by winning the first trial Sunday (Race 8). Under jockey Ruben Lozano the Royal Shake Em mare defeated The Streakin Clean by a half-length to get the fourth fastest qualifying time of :19.910 seconds, a 104 speed index. Danny Montes conditions the Greg and Renee Hickman bred mare out of Runaway Eye Opener, by Mr Eye Opener.
