Track Record Holder Sets Top Adequan Texas Derby Challenge Time

HOUSTON, TX—MAY 4, 2013—Coming off a track record setting performance in his last start on April 4, Tejas Energy B backed up that race with a 3-½ length romp as he was much the best Saturday afternoon for the Adequan Texas Derby Challenge trials at Sam Houston Race Park.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, from the four trial races for AQHA Challenge enrolled 3-year-olds, will return to the Houston racetrack on Saturday, May 18 and vie for the winner's share of a $25,000-added purse. The winner will also get a starting spot in the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship(G1) during the Bank of America Challenge Championship Night at Los Alamitos Race Course on November 9.

Racing for Antonio Delgado, Jr., the lightly raced Tejas Energy B completed the 400 yard course in a quick :19.817 seconds, a 98 speed index. Winless in three starts as a two-year-old, the Manuel Vega, Jr. trainee broke his maiden by 4-¾ lengths in his first start this season. In that race he broke the Sam Houston 300 yard track record in a time of :15.006, earning a 113 speed index for that effort.

The royally bred son of champion and champion sire Tres Seis is out of the First Down Dash mare First Down Energy. A sister to champion Tiny First Effort ($445,393) and Grade 1 winner Tiny First Down ($317,881), First Down Energy is the dam of Grade 1 winner Terrific Energy ($174,393). Luis Vivanco had the riding assignment aboard the Bielau Oaks Texas-bred.

Another well bred colt, Dash Master Jess was equally impressive in the first trial with a 2-½ length win, under jockey Manuel Gutierrez, to get the second fastest qualifying time of :19.992. Racing for Cesar Rosales, the Mr Jess Perry colt has won or placed in five of seven starts.

Bred in Texas the Rolando Almanza trainee is out of Kansas Derby(G1) winner and champion producer Dash Master Miss ($249,430), dam of eight stakes horses including Significant Speed ($517,605), and Push The Pace ($513,119), etc. Scarlett Hill Farm, Inc. is the breeder.

Sixes Award posted a 1-¼ length effort in the second trail for owner/trainer Jose Espinosa. Fourth in last year's Sam Houston Juvenile Invitational, Jerry Windham bred the Winners Award colt in Texas. He is out of the First Down Dash mare First Down Sixes. Cipriano Vidana was riding.
