First Crop Sire Coronado Cartel Gets First Winner and Graded Stakes Finalist

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK--MARCH 11, 2018--Highly anticipated first crop sire Coronado Cartel got his first winner and first graded stakes qualifier Saturday night when Shez A Cartel Chick won the 11th trial for the Grade 3 Oklahoma Futurity at Remington Park.

Michelle Hurdle saddled the bay Oklahoma-bred filly, from the Country Chicks Man mare Chase This Check, for owner/breeder Double O Acres LLC. She stopped the timer in :15.548 seconds to qualify for the $371,200 Oklahoma Futurity.

The Oklahoma Futurity, the longest-running futurity in the sport of American Quarter Horse racing, will headline a stakes-laden program at Remington Park on Saturday, March 24.

Coronado Cartel also sired Jet Packed Kicks who posted the 12th fastest time in the trials to earn a spot in the March 24th $50,000-Guaranteed Oklahoma Juvenile. Pedro Martinez conditions the gelding out of Full Of Air, by Dashair, for owners Carlos Nieto and Mario Gutierrez.

Winner of the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity at 2, Coronado Cartel won or placed in nine of 12 starts and banked $416,178. He also won the Mr Jess Perry Stakes at Ruidoso Downs, was second in the Mr Master Bug Handicap and was a finalist in the Texas Classic Futurity(G1) and Sooner State Stakes(RG1)-twice.

The son of leading living sire Corona Cartel is out of the Grade 1 Heritage Place Futurity(G1) winner First Carolina, dam of 6 winners including full-siblings to Coronado Cartel-Rainbow Futurity(G1) winner Ms First Prize Rose; Rainbow Juvenile winner Denver Pass; and Firecracker Futurity(G2) runner-up Itea.

The second dam is former Broodmare of the Year First Prize Dash, by Dash For Cash, a sister to all-time leading sire First Down Dash.
