Q-RACING JOURNAL—AUGUST 18, 2014—For this week’s edition of Pedigree Analysis, we’re going to look north – way north – about 1,700 miles from AQHA headquarters, to take a look at the $35,652 Alberta Bred Derby (R) at Northlands Park, in Alberta, Canada, which was won by Janis Calton’s FDD Queens Dynasty.

Bred in Alberta by the partnership of Vanee/Sakamoto/Edwards, the gray filly FDD Queens Dynasty has won five of eight starts and earned $27,732.

FDD Queens Dynasty is by FDD Dynasty and is out of the Strawfly Special mare Queens Strawfly.

We have looked at fourth-year sire FDD Dynasty several times recently, including the pedigree reviews of Far Niente, Nellie Delaney and Kates Dynasty, so we won’t review his history again this week. But in addendum, the latter two of those top three runners both won this weekend, the former in the Merial Los Alamitos Distaff Challenge and the latter in her qualifying trial to the All American Derby (G1).

FDD Dynasty stands at Bob Moore Farms at Norman, Oklahoma, and also is the sire of All American Futurity (G1) second-fastest qualifier Thunderball B.

FDD Queens Dynasty is out of Queens Strawfly, a 9-year-old mare by the great sire Strawfly Special and out of the top runner First Place Queen.

Queens Strawfly was bred in Oklahoma by Newcomb Cattle Co. and Micah Leslie. She won or placed in five of eight career starts, including winning the 2007 Ford Canada Juvenile Challenge, and earned $25,656 with a career-high speed index of 102.

FDD Queens Dynasty is her second foal, and her first stakes winner. She has an unraced 2-year-old by Sizzlin Red Corona named Sizzlin Strawfly.

Strawfly Special was foaled in 1987 and very quickly became a star. Grade 1-placed during his racing career, he made his true mark as a sire, seeing his progeny earn more than $25.7 million on the racetrack. He died in 2004, and Queens Strawfly was a member of his final full crop. Strawfly Special has sired four foals since then, two in 2006 and two in 2012.

Queens Strawfly’s dam is First Place Queen, a daughter of First Place Dash, and a mare that brings us right back to the family of last week’s featured horse, Mister Big.

First Place Queen was bred by Jerry Windham out of the Illusivo mare Illusive Princess. She was a beast on the track, with victories in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Million and Golden State futurities, and was a finalist in the Grade 1 All American Futurity and Rainbow Derby. She earned $880,869 in a mere 12 career starts and set a 250-yard track record at Ruidoso.

The 14-year-old mare is already the dam of 27 foals, of which 19 have started and 11 are winners. Her biggest winner by far is the Shazoom stallion Mr Queens Mystery, who won the 2008 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) for owner Azoom LP and earned $599,381 in his career before retiring to stud. First Place Queen also produced All American Derby (G1) finalist Wonderboy (by Shazoom, $185,256), and stakes-placed runners Tres Queens (by Tres Seis, $69,583) and Queens R Blue (by Shazoom, $65,997).

First Place Queen is by First Place Dash, who (as I mentioned last week) died at age 7 after beginning what might have been a truly great stud career. From only 150 starters, he sired 103 winners (69 percent) and 18 stakes winners (12 percent), with average progeny earnings of $31,624 per starter.

Her mother, Illusive Princess, was bred by Windham and was herself a stakes winner. From 13 starters the mare produced nine winners. Her best was certainly First Place Queen, but she was also the dam of stakes winner First Place Princess (by First Place Dash, $73,583). She is also the dam of Princess Of Dash (by Dash For Cash), dam of stakes winner Princess Of Zoom (by Shazoom, $30,632) and Grade 1 finalist Prince Of Alexander (by Stel Corona, $41,680).

Illusive Princess’ dam, Kipty Kate, is also the dam of stakes winner Runaway Kate (by Runaway Winner), dam of stakes winner Katies Sign ($63,119), who is the dam of stakes winner Katies Award ($75,428). Runaway Kate is also the dam of stakes-placed Jazzy Sixes (by Sixes Royal, $140,586). Kipty Kate’s daughter Jennifer Kate is a Grade 1-placed runner and produced FDD Dynasty’s champion daughter Kates Dynasty ($510,454), as well as stakes winner Texas Icon (by Corona Cartel, $111,105) and Texas Sixes (by Streakin Sixes, $80,652).

So from Edmonton, Alberta, to Ruidoso, New Mexico, this dynasty of a family is jumping.
