Detective Bernardo (TB) Fastest Qualifier In Battle Of The Breeds Claiming Stakes Trials

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—NOVEMBER 12, 2022—Thoroughbred Detective Bernardo posted the fastest qualifying time from three trials contested for the 870 Yard Battle Of The Breeds Claiming Stakes at Lone Star Park Saturday night.

The eight fastest qualifiers, from trials for 3-year-olds & up Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosas entered for a $7,500 claiming price, will return to the Lone Star Park on Saturday, December 3, to vie for the winner's share of a $50,000-Guaranteed purse. The final field will be split half-and-half Thoroughbred vs. Quarter Horse.

In his first start against mixed company, California-bred Detective Bernardo (TB) ran down Slp Mighty High(QH) in the opening trial to win by a nose and establish the top qualifying time of :46.267 seconds, equaling a 90 speed index.

Racing for owner-trainer Javier Ruiz Ortiz, Detective Bernardo picked up his second career win and boosted his earning mark to over $25,000 under jockey Erick Garcia-Alfaro.  George Schmitt and Mary Clare Schmitt bred the 4-year-old son of Under Caution from the Lord Carson mare Sharoana.

Quarter horse Slp Mighty High was runner-up in the opening trial to garner the second fastest time of :46.275 seconds, also a 90 speed index. Trainer Karen Jacks saddled the son of multiple stakes sire Mighty Invictus for owner Carl R. Moore Management, LLC.

Francisco Calderon rode the Texas-bred stakes winner of $121,871. Scott and Linsey Pruett bred the 9-year-old out of Rud Ruby Slippers

Six of the eight qualifiers came out of the opening trial. Two of those qualifiers, 4th fastest Cold Snack Thirty (TB) and 5th fastest El Bee Dee (QH) was claimed and will run under new ownership in the December 3 final.

Owner-trainer Mark Hibdon claimed Cold Snack Thirty from owner Jason Crabree. Hibbdon also owns-and-trains the 3rd fastest qualifier Beta Capo Song (TB).

Trainer Johnathan Castaneda claimed El Bee Dee from owner Jose Carlos Hernandez.
