Candys Special Power, Cartel Kisses Co-Fastest Qualifiers For $381,693 Black Gold Oaks Championship

CLAREMORE, OK–OCTOBER 30, 2022–First time starter Candys Special Power and multiple stakes winner Cartel Kisses tied for the fastest qualifying time after eight trials were contested for the $381,693 Black Gold Oaks Championship(RG3) Sunday afternoon at Will Rogers Downs.

The Black Gold Oaks is the richest race for 2-year-old Quarter Horse fillies in the nation.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to the Northeastern Oklahoma racetrack on Tuesday, November 15th to vie for winner's purse valued at $152,678.

Making her career debut Candys Special Power bumped at the start under jockey Agustin Silva but recovered nicely to win the third trial by half-a-length while posting co-fastest qualifying mark of :19.981 seconds, a 92 speed index for 400 yards into an 8 mph crosswind.

Trainer Jesus Ruiz trains the daughter of second-crop sire Power Jam(TB) for owner Ken O'Brien.  PV Quarter Horse Farms LLC bred the gray filly in Louisiana from the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Candys Special Wagon. O'Brien is co-owner, with Dunn Ranch, of the filly's sire Power Jam.

Rainbow Juvenile Invitational winner Cartel Kisses rolled to a 1-1/4 length win in the sixth trial to tie with Candys Special Power for top qualifying mark of :19.981 seconds. M. Heath Taylor conditions the Oklahoma-bred daughter of a leading sire Kiss My Hocks for owners Larry and Bobbie Rice. The filly is a $50,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate.  

Bred by Flag Ranch LLC, from the Carters Cartel mare Midnight Cartel, Cartel Kisses has won seven of nine starts this season and earned nearly $160,000.   She also won  the Easy Jet Stakes and was a finalist in the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity(RG1).

Mrs Kvn, a daughter of first-crop sire Kvn Corona, was second to Candys Special Power to get the third fastest time of :20.046 seconds, a 90 speed index. Trainer Shawna Manriquez named jockey Daniel Torres to ride the Utah bred filly for owner Thomas Scheckel.

Scheckel paid $85,000 for the McColee Land & Livestock LLC bred filly from the First Down Dash mare Little Surfer. It was the first win six starts for the half-sister to champion Uncle D.

Kvn Corona and world champion sire FDD Dynasty sired two finalist each to the November 15 final. All American Futurity(G1) finalist and stakes winner Jes An Angel was fourth to Candys Special Power to get the seventh fastest time.
