EDMONTON, ALB—OCTOB ER 28, 2022–Under a confident ride by Armando Andrade, Bearcat Bill got up at the wire to defeat Wave Burner by a neck in the $25,284(US) Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby at Century Mile Racetrack Friday night. First Golden Rose was a nose back in the blanket-finish to get third.
Saddled by trainer Misael Moreno, Bearcat Bill completed the 400 yards in :20.239 seconds, equaling a 97 speed index into a 15 mph crosswind. It was third career win for the Alberta-bred son of leading Canadian sire First Timber.
Raced by owner-breeders Barry and Janice Sather, Bearcat Bill picked up $11,378(US) to increase his bankroll to $47,184. The multiple stakes winning gelding is out of Splashy Mamacita by Volcom. Two races back he won the Alberta Bred Derby.
Runner-up Wave Burner led early under jockey Daniel Garcia. The graded stakes winning son of world champion Wave Carver races for owner Jeffrey Rath. Breeder and trainer Wesley Oulton conditions last year's Canada Cup Futurity(RG3) out of First Prize Sass by First Timber. The $4,298(US) runner-up purse boosted the gray geldings earnings to $56,613.
First Golden Rose, a multiple stakes-placed daughter of First Timber, earned $2,528(US) for third. Trainer Misael Moreno named jockey Alexander Marti to ride the bay filly for owner-breeder Isaak Fehr. Out of the Corona Martel mare Madam Goldilocks, First Golden Rose has earned $23,383.
She Wears The Pantz, Interes Fino, Top Shelf 109, Smoke Ziva, Firecrunch, Firelicious and Valiant Steve B completed the field.
