Doin It Just For Fun Sets Top Mark on Night 1 of Texas Classic Futurity Trials at Lone Star Park

Doin It Just For Fun Sets Top Mark on Night 1 of Texas Classic Futurity Trials at Lone Star Park

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—OCTOBER 27, 2022—Doin It Just Fun, a full brother to two-time AQHA Racing Champion Jessies First Down, won his is fourth consecutive race Thursday while posting the top qualifying mark on the first of two nights of trials for the Grade 1 $1,209,172 Texas Classic Futurity at Lone Star Park.

Tonight's top five qualifiers will be joined by the five fastest qualifier from nine trials tomorrow night (OCT 28) to vie for a $538,081 winners' purse in the 400 yard final Saturday, November 11th.

Starting off three consecutive wins at Ruidoso Downs over the summer, fastest qualifier Doin It Just For Fun races for owner-breeder Ted G. Abrams, Sr. M. Heath Taylor conditions the son of three-time world champion sire FDD Dynasty from the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess A Classy Lassy.

Doin It Just For Fun broke his maiden at Ruidoso Downs on June 12, then won both his Rainbow Futurity trial and All American Futurity trial but failed to qualify.

Under jockey Rodrigo Vallejo the bay gelding was an easy 1-3/4 length winner tonight while posting the top qualifying mark of :19.743 seconds, a 94 speed index into a 10 mph headwind.  He has earned $20,310.

Donit Just For Fun is a full brother to two-time AQHA Racing World Champion Jessies First Down, a 19 time winner of $1,599,502.

The top three qualifiers came out of the third trial (RACE 4) with winner Orbyson posting the second fastest time of :20.024 seconds, an 87 speed index. Trainer Santo Carrizales, Jr. saddled the 2022 All American Futurity(G1) finalist for owner TYKHE Racing LLC.

Bobby D. Cox bred the $50,000 TQHA Yearling Sale graduate, by leading third-crop sire One Fabulous Eagle, from the Shazoom mare Shazumba. Juan Paulido had the riding call aboard the two-time winner from five starts. Winner of the Sam Houston Juvenile in June, Orbyson has banked $187,257 this season.

Dena Marie finished a neck back in the fastest trial to get the third fastest time of :20.076 seconds, an 86 speed index. Trey Wood named AQHA Racing champion jockey Ricky Ramirez to ride the Oklahoma homebred for owner-breeders Mark and Fay Annett McCloy.

The daughter of leading sire Apollitical Jess broke her maiden in the All American Futurity trials in August then finished third in the All American Juvenile in her last start. Out of Especially Tres by Dash Air, Dena Marie has earned $30,688 in five starts.

Legacy Cartel, a $92,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale graduate owned by MRB Racing LLC was a head winner of over Heritage Place Futurity(G1) winner Tres Crystals in the fourth trial to get the fourth fastest time of :20.080, a 86 speed index into a 10 mph headwind.

It was the second win in five starts for the Manuel Rodolfo Rodriguez trainee ridden by jockey Esgar Ramirez. The son of a leading sire Favorite Cartel was bred in California by Silver Racing LLC. Out of the Golden State Juvenile winner Apollitical Legacy, by Apollitical Jess, Legacy Cartel has earned $16,380 in five career starts.

The final qualifying spot on Thursday night went to opening trial winner Fancy Scarface, a two-time graded stakes qualifying son of first-crop sire Pyc Fun N Fancy. The sorrel gelding clocked the 400 yards in :20.110, an 85 speed index into a 10 mph headwind. Fancy Scarface was the second qualifier on Thursday night for trainer Santos Carrizales, Jr. and jockey Juan Paulido.

Racing for Barboza Racing Corp, the Oklahoma-bred gelding qualified earlier this year for both the Heritage Place Futurity(G1) and the Oklahoma Futurity(G2) at Remington Park. Bred by Rito Sosa, Fancy Scarface has banked $75,927 from three wins in five starts. He is out of the Walk Thru Fire mare Dolls In Fire.
