SHELBYVILLE, IN—JUNE 15, 2019— Shakeitonthebeach showed just how tough she was Saturday by winning the 10th running of the $183,200 Gordon Mobley Futurity at Indiana Grand. The two-year-old daughter of Escondido Beach sprung out of the gate and never looked back to score the win by one-half length in the 300-yard dash.
Trained by five-time leading Quarter Horse Trainer Randy Smith, Shakeitonthebeach was the quickest qualifier from the Mobley trials but stablemate Blue Eyed Newman was undefeated coming into the race and Jockey Berkley Packer selected to ride him as the favorite of the 10-horse field.
Jockey Jose Beltran was aboard for the first time and didn't waste time getting the freshman grey filly in gear. She was the first out of the gate and had the field at her heels in the first stride. Several horses, including Blue Eyed Newman were closing in late but they could not catch Shakeitonthebeach as she scooted under the finish line in :15.528 seconds. Jess Z Bob and Juan Marquez moved in late for second over Blue Eyed Newman for third.
Shakeitonthebeach paid $7.40 to win. She recorded the ninth win of the season for Smith, who is leading the Quarter Horse trainer standings once again this season. Smith kept the filly on a simple plan heading into the Mobley Futurity Final.
"We didn't do a whole lot with her between the trial and the final, we just tried to keep her quiet and calm," said Smith, who has stalls at Indiana Grand as well as a farm just minutes away. "She goes back and forth between the track and the farm. She's a good solid little filly. She breaks like a rocket. We are proud to have her in the barn."
Shakeitonthebeach now has two wins in three starts for Smith and Sheri Miller, who is also the breeder. She earned more than $100,000 with her stakes win for Miller, who has a long history with the filly's family.

The Millers purchased Botticelli Shake and raced her at Indiana Grand before making her a brood mare. She has been a great brood mare for them. Botticelli Shake has a full sister and a full brother to Shakeitonthebeach at Miller's farm, and she's bred back and in foal to Escondido Beach, so another full sibling is on the way.
Escondido Beach has also been a super addition to the Miller Ranch in Shipshewana, Ind. The Millers acquired him from Bobby Cox, who still owns the 14-year-old stallion by Corona Cartel. He raced at Indiana Grand a few times before going into stud at their farm. Escondido Beach has been the leading sire in Indiana for the past five years, and with two-year-olds like Shakeitonthebeach and Blue Eyed Newman, he's well on his way to a sixth title.
"We got him (Escondido Beach) when he was four," said Sheri. "He's been good to us and so has Bobby (Cox). We are fortunate to have him."
Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing is conducted Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at 2:15 p.m. and Saturday at 6:15 p.m. The 120-day racing meet continues through Wednesday, Nov. 6.
