Five Bar Fandango Fastest Qualifier to Ontario Bred Derby at Ajax

AJAX, ON—JUNE 2, 2019—The field for the $50,000-added Ontario Bred Derby is set after two trials at Ajax Downs on Sunday afternoon.

Five Bar Fandango, winner of the first trial, set the overall fastest qualifying time of 15.760 in the 300-yard race. The final, restricted to Ontario-bred 3-year-olds, will be held on June 16.

The three fastest qualifiers all came out of the first trial. Five Bar Fandango ($2.80) defeated Shake It Twice by a neck; Queens Award finished two lengths behind in third place.

Five Bar Fandango was ridden by Tony Phillips for trainer Bryn Robertson. The 3-year-old filly is a homebred for Carol and Jaime Robertson, out of Had to Be Fandango, by Hadtobenuts.

This was the second win in six career starts for the Five Bar Cartel filly. She broke her maiden in her previous start, her first of 2019. As a 2-year-old, she qualified for the $99,700 Alex Picov Memorial Futurity.

Second place finisher Shake It Twice covered the 300-yard trial in 15.830 under jockey Cory Spataro. The filly has never finished out of the money in her four lifetime starts, including a third-place finish in the $65,800 Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity at Ajax in August.

Shake It Twice is owned, trained and bred by Chantelle Bourgeois, by Look At Magics Form and out of Shake Pretty Baby, by Pretty Boy Perry.

With a time of 16.160, Queens Award completed the trifecta as the third overall fastest from two trials. Queens Award is owned and bred by Heste Sport Inc, by Winners Award and out of the Brimmerton mare Copper State Queen. She is trained by Jason Pascoe; Brian Bell had the call for the first time. She finished fourth, also behind Shake It Twice, in the $65,800 Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity.

In the second trial, Shes Sizzling, posted the fifth fastest time of 16.480 as the winner via disqualification.

Shes Sizzling ($2.80) was the heavy post-time favorite for the race. She finished second behind Teller a Secret, who was disqualified for interference and placed third.

Trainer Erik Lehtinen also co-owns and bred the filly with Joyce Lehtinen. Ramino Castillo returned to the irons in Sunday’s trial; the pair had teamed up to finish third in the $99,700 Alex Picov Futurity last year. She also qualified to the $146,400 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity at Canterbury Park.

Shes Sizzling is by Sizzlin Cartel, out of Shenandoah Cartel, by Eyesa Special.
