OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 10, 2019—Trainers Matt Whitekiller and Dee Keener qualified half the horses Friday night in trials for the 10-Paint-horse final of the Grade 1, $129,490 American Paint Classic Futurity set to run on Saturday, April 27.

Whitekiller qualified two Paints and Keener three with Whitekiller’s Southern Electric being the fastest of all 2-year-old Paints that went to post in the five trials, stopping the timer for 350 yards in 17.704 seconds for a speed index of 84. Southern Electric is a 2-year-old gelded son of CRM Livewire, out of the Southern Cartel mare Ze Southern Girl. He is owned by Dan and Kaye Jones of Kemp, Texas and was bred in Texas by his owners.

Jockey Cody Smith was aboard for the win and he qualified three of the top four fastest qualifiers in these trials. Justine Klaiber was the only other rider to have multiple qualifiers with two.

Whitekiller also qualified Babe Wired, while Keener had three in the top 10 – Goodbye Loretta, WF Rain Maclane and WF Dashing Warrior.

If times and speed indexes mean anything in the trials, it won’t be a difficult decision for Smith as he dominated in those categories with his fastest qualifier, Southern Electric. Even though the other two Paints were in the top four, they were seven and nine speed index points below Southern Electric.

This gelding was a winner in trials for the second time in as many tries. He also won on March 10 by a head in a trial, qualifying for the $162,028 Oklahoma Paint/Appaloosa Futurity final. He ran seventh in that race, finishing behind a couple of horses – Babe Wired and CL Victorias Secret – that were slower in the trials Friday. In that final, however, he had a slow start from the gate and then was steadied late.

With Smith in the saddle for this trial, as he was in this horse’s previous trial win, he popped out of the gate on top and was never headed, winning by a half-length at 9-5 odds. Smith did not, however, choose to ride him in the Oklahoma Paint/Appaloosa Futurity final. After qualifying him in that, he rode the winner of the race, DTL Chasin Tale for Whitekiller. That horse was not involved in the American Paint Classic Futurity trials.
