DTL Samureye Upsets Three-Time World Champion Painted Turnpike In Paul Harber Memorial At Remington Park OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 10, 2019—For the first time in Painted Turnpike's storied history as three-time world champion Paint and in 30 lifetime races, he failed to finish in the top two Friday night in the $26,100 Paul Harber Memorial Stakes as DTL Samureye pulled off the upset at Remington Park. The race was for Paints and Appaloosas, 3 and older, going 350 yards.

Those wagering large amounts to show on the Paint superstar, known as "bridge-jumpers" in gambling terms, paid for the loss. Several thousands of dollars came into the show pool in the late betting on Painted Turnpike, who was the 1-2 favorite to win as he had won 26-of-29 starts before Friday. A total of $35,129 was bet into the show pool, compared to $10,520 in the win pool. When Painted Turnpike landed fourth, a nose out of third, it caused the winner, DTL Samureye, at 5-2 odds to pay $7.20 to win, $4.80 to place and $65 to show. The second and third-place horses, D Railed and Bullet Bonnie paid $40.80 and $37.40 to show, respectively.

The players who dumped large amounts to show on Painted Turnpike, seeking a "sure-thing" return in the form of $2.10 for each winning $2 bet, lost all of their wagers.

Painted Turnpike, the all-time winningest Paint horse in the history of the sport in earnings and wins, had won this same race in 2016 and 2018, but didn't have it Friday night almost from the start. Painted Turnpike added $1,491 for his fourth-place finish and now has earned $463,836.

"Hey, that's horse racing," said Painted Turnpike's trainer Matt Whitekiller. "Painted Turnpike wasn't quite himself tonight for sure. But with that being said, that is really a nice horse that won the race. Congrats to all his connections. We will just have to try them again."

The loss broke a string of 14 wins in a row for Painted Turnpike. He had not lost since Oct. 1, 2016 when he came in second in the Lorelei Derby at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla. Painted Turnpike holds the all-time record for most wins at Remington Park for Quarter Horses/Paints/Appaloosas with 13. Highland Ice and Elegant Exxactsy each had 15 wins at Remington Park for Thoroughbreds.

DTL Samureye was no stranger to a winner's circle, though. This was the 4-year-old gelding's fifth win in a row, three of those in stakes-company, two at Will Rogers Downs and one at Gillespie County Racetrack in Fredericksburg, Texas. This son of SF Royal Quick Flash, out of the Mr Eye Opener (QH) mare Eysa Savvy Queen (QH), has now won 8-of-13 starts and run second three other times for lifetime earnings of $91,265. He won $14,910 from tonight's purse.

The winner broke second from the gate under jockey Jesse Levario but quickly overtook early leader and second-place finisher D Railed. At the wire, DTL Samureye was in front by 1-1/4 lengths. Painted Turnpike was about 1-3/4 lengths behind the winner. DTL Samureye's winning time was 17.351 seconds for 350 yards, just a smidge off the stakes record, set by Painted Turnpike in 2018, of :17.346. DTL Samureye earned a Speed Index of 94 for the win. Painted Turnpike's fourth place finish garnered an 86.

It was Levario's third win with only three mounts this season at Remington Park. He was given a leg up by trainer Josue Ponce for the owner of DTL Samureye, Almada Racing of San Antonio. DTL Samureye gave his connections their first win in the Paul Harber Memorial.

The Paul Harber Memorial is named after a founding member of the American Paint Horse Association who helped guide the organization for over four decades.
