Legendari Pulls Off Huge Upset In Feature Allowance Race In Her 3-Year-Old Debut For 2019

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 10, 2019—In five career starts before Thursday night, Legendari, a 3-year-old filly out of trainer Ed Hardy’s barn, had never faced allowance horses. She had raced against maidens twice and then been in tough futurity trials her other three tries.

The drop in class was all she needed as she beat a field of allowance non-winners of two races lifetime at 31-1 odds. She was completely ignored despite having run against much tougher futurity trial horses at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas; Retama Park near San Antonio, and at Remington Park in 2018.

Legendari, a 3-year-old daughter of Corona Cartel, out of the First Down Dash mare All About Ease, is owned by Xcel Farms in Clifton, Kan. She was ridden to victory by jockey Eugenio Navarette. Her record now is two wins from six starts, and two thirds for a total bankroll of $26,186. She raked in $11,872 from the $25,000 purse. This filly was bred in Texas by Bobby Cox.

Legendari covered 350 yards over a fast track in 17.65 seconds for a speed index of 86. Legendari paid $65.40 to win, $21.40 to place, and $11.60 to show. The combination of Legendari winning and 37-1 longshot Keystonescountryboy finishing second produced some huge exotic wager payoffs. The $2 exacta was worth $1,328.80, the 50-cent trifecta with 9-1 Valliance running third paid $5,038.30. And the 10-cent superfecta with 8-1 My Dad Don getting up for fourth returned $5,039.90. Legendari won by a head in a battle of longshots for the win. Keystonescountryboy was another half-length ahead of Valliance.

Valdivia Triples

Another barn that has gotten red hot lately is that of trainer Guillermo Valdivia. He won three races Thursday night – the third with first-time starter Chicks With Coronas, the seventh with first-timer Heza Painted Driver, and the ninth with Tempting Candy. The first two winners were ridden by Rolando Raudales and the final win came with Armando Ramirez II aboard.

Owned and bred in Oklahoma by Nolan Pevehouse of Webbers Falls, Okla. and trained throughout his career by Matt Whitekiller, Painted Turnpike returns to racing while continuing to serve as a stallion. The 6-year-old horse currently enjoys a 14-race winning streak. The last defeat for Painted Turnpike was a second-place finish on Oct. 21, 2016 in the $20,100 Lorelei Derby at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla.
